SAN DIEGO (AP) -- The San Diego Padres stopped their eight-game skid with formerly missing ingredients -- tough pitching and timely hitting.

Arizona's team-record winning streak ended at nine as Brian Meadows pitched eight strong innings Sunday to give the Padres a 3-1 victory.

"The outing Brian put up today was huge," San Diego's Phil Nevin said.

Meadows (4-3) was outstanding after Tony Womack hit a leadoff home run on the second pitch of the game.

Steve Finley had Arizona's other hit on a one-out single in the first. The Diamondbacks went on to load the bases, but Meadows escaped when Damian Miller flied out.

"The guy pitched a good game," Womack said. "Sometimes you got to be modest."

The Diamondbacks did not get another hit the rest of the game off Meadows and Trevor Hoffman, who got his sixth save.

Arizona's only two runners after the first inning came on a walk and an error.

"I knew after the home run I needed to have good location," Meadows said. "I felt comfortable on both sides of the plate."

Ed Sprague tied the score at 1 with an RBI double in the sixth inning. Nevin followed with a double to score Sprague with the go-ahead run.

"It's what I've been saying we needed all along," Padres manager Bruce Bochy said. "But we have to win a lot more games."

San Diego had lost six straight games against Arizona this season. The victory was only the Padres' third in 18 games overall.

It appeared Womack's homer might hold up with Omar Daal (1-4) pitching strong into the sixth inning.

"We've been waiting for bad things to happen," Nevin said. "We easily could have hung our heads after Tony's home run, but we didn't."

The Padres took the lead with three runs in the sixth, helped by two errors.

Ruben Rivera reached on Womack's errant throw from shortstop and Sprague followed with a run-scoring double. Nevin also doubled for a 2-0 lead, and he later scored when third baseman Lenny Harris let a ground ball by Wiki Gonzalez go through his legs.

"The ball just came up. You can't control that," Womack said.

Daal allowed three runs, one earned, on four hits in seven innings.

Daal came away without a victory over the Padres despite an outstanding outing for the second time this season. On April 11, Daal allowed two runs on eight hits in nine innings, getting a no-decision when Sprague's leadoff homer in the ninth sent the game into extra innings. ... The Padres beat Arizona for just fourth time in their last 21 meetings. ... Nevin was hit in the right elbow by a line drive off the bat of teammate John Roskos in the sixth inning. Nevin, leading off third base in foul territory, couldn't get out of the way of the low liner, but stayed in the game.
