OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- Jorge Fabregas, who tied the game with an
RBI single in the seventh, hit a two-run single in the ninth as the
Kansas City Royals rallied from a four-run deficit to win 8-7
Tuesday over the Oakland Athletics.
Fabregas, who had three hits, pumped both fists after his
decisive hit off Doug Jones (0-1).
The winner was Dan Reichert (2-2), who allowed one unearned run
in four innings of relief. Jerry Spradlin pitched the ninth for his
second save despite allowing an RBI single to Jason Giambi.
The Royals, who trailed by four runs in the first inning, tied
the game 6-6 in the seventh on a solo homer by Dave McCarty and the
RBI single by Fabregas.
It was just the sixth win for the Royals in 21 road games this
season. Kansas City lost four of its previous five games overall.
Terrence Long and Randy Velarde opened the bottom of the first
inning with homers as the A's took a 5-1 lead. Jeremy Giambi added
an RBI single, Eric Chavez hit a sacrifice fly and another run
scored on a wild pitch in the inning.
Jeremy Giambi had another run-scoring single in the fifth.
Mark Quinn had an RBI double in the first for Kansas City, and
Mike Sweeney singled in a run in the third. The Royals added two in
the fourth on a run-scoring double by Johnny Damon and a
bases-loaded walk to Sweeney.
Kansas City starter Chad Durbin, who has not won since his first
major league start on April 6, lasted just one-third of an inning
and gave up five runs.
A's starter Tim Hudson struggled for five innings, allowing four
runs on six hits and six walks.
Notes: Jones made his 806th appearance, moving within one game of
tying Nolan Ryan for 23rd on the career list. ... Kansas City OF
Jermaine Dye missed his second straight game with lower back
tightness. ... Jason Giambi, who went 3-for-5 with three singles,
has three straight multihit games. ... The Royals have allowed an
AL-worst 67 homers this season. ... The Royals stole three bases to
increase their AL-best total to 47. Damon had one of them,
increasing his AL-leading total to 15. ... Velarde, who missed the
first 31 games of the season with a left knee strain, has homered
in consecutive games.
