GAME LOG
PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Kevin Jarvis provided a pleasant surprise
for the Colorado Rockies.
Jarvis, making his first start since May 1, held Philadelphia
hitless for 5 1/3 innings Saturday night and the Rockies beat the
Phillies 4-3.
Even though he did not get the win, Jarvis was a big part of the
victory.
"It's been three weeks, so I don't know if anyone knew what to
expect," Jarvis said. "I wanted to show I could do a good job and
give the team a chance to win."
The Phillies lost for the seventh time in eight games. Third
baseman Scott Rolen did not play because of soreness in his legs
and back, and will also sit out Sunday.
Jarvis did not give up a hit until Doug Glanville's two-run homer with
one out in the sixth tied it at 2. One out later, Bobby Abreu also
homered.
Jarvis, who began the game with a 7.85 ERA in three starts, left
after Abreu's homer.
"I made a bad pitch to Glanville, a hanging curve, but Abreu
hit a good pitch that was down," Jarvis said.
Julian Tavarez, Mike DeJean, Mike Myers and Jose Jimenez teamed
for hitless relief in the final 3 2/3 innings.
Tavarez (3-2) pitched a scoreless seventh for the win, while
Jimenez got two outs for his sixth save.
Jarvis' last complete game was in Philadelphia in 1996 while
pitching for Cincinnati.
"I really like the mound here, it's pretty high but I'm pretty
comfortable on it," he said.
The Rockies scored twice in the eighth. Todd Helton opened with
a single off Chris Brock (0-4) and Jeffery Hammonds' double-play
ball was misplayed by shortstop Desi Relaford.
"A two-hop ground ball to end the inning, that's going to come
back to haunt you," Relaford said. "That play has got to be made,
100 times out of 100. It cost us the game."
Said Phillies manager Terry Francona: "We've been staying on
him every day on concentrating more. He just didn't make the
play."
After a wild pitch advanced the runners, Darren Bragg walked.
Brent Mayne's grounder scored pinch-runner Brian Hunter with the
tying run and Neifi Perez hit an RBI single with two outs.
"I'm trying to be aggressive," Perez said. "I've been working
in the cage on not trying to pull everything. Early in the year I
was pulling the ball too much."
Colorado took a 2-0 lead in the second on an RBI double by
Helton and a bases-loaded walk to Tom Goodwin by Paul Byrd.
Game notes
Mike Lansing singled in the seventh inning to extend his
hitting streak to 10 games. ... So far this season, Colorado has
had four weather postponements, two rain-delayed games, a Coors
Field power outage. On Friday night, the game was delayed for 12
minutes because the umpires were late arriving. ... Rolen leads the
Phillies in home runs (12) and RBI (27).
