GAME LOG
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Desi Relaford had a career-high five RBI,
including a three-run homer, and Pat Burrell homered for the second
time in four career games as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Los
Angeles Dodgers 7-6 Saturday night.
Robert Person (5-2) went five innings for the victory, as the
Phillies won for only the fourth time in 14 games. The right-hander
allowed four runs and six hits, including a pair of two-run doubles
by Eric Karros.
The Dodgers lost third baseman Adrian Beltre in the sixth inning
when he strained his right hamstring running out a grounder to
second base.
Karros, who leads the Dodgers with 44 RBI, trimmed
Philadelphia's lead to 6-4 in the fifth with his second two-run
double. Todd Hundley singled off reliever Wayne Gomes' glove with
the bases loaded in the seventh, making it 6-5. But pinch-hitter
Dave Hansen lined out to center.
The Dodgers put the tying run on third again in the eighth, but
right fielder Bobby Abreu robbed Mark Grudzielanek of a bloop
single to end the inning.
Mike Lieberthal ended an 11-game RBI drought with a solo homer
in the ninth to give the Phillies a two-run lead.
Jeff Brantley got three outs for his fourth save. Brantley
allowed a solo homer to Gary Sheffield, his 15th, leading off the
ninth.
Burrell led off the Phillies' four-run second inning off Darren
Dreifort (3-2) with a drive into the pavilion in right-center.
It was the second homer in 14 at-bats for the No. 1 overall pick
in the 1998 draft.
Dreifort then walked Rob Ducey and gave up a single to Kevin
Jordan before Relaford homered inside the right-field pole for his
third homer, giving Philadelphia 4-2 lead.
Relaford, who had only three RBI in his 38 previous career
at-bats against the Dodgers, made it 6-2 in the third with a
two-run single to center.
Dreifort allowed six runs and six hits over three innings in his
shortest outing of the season. It was the third straight time he
has allowed six earned runs, following his two-hit shutout on May
12 at St. Louis.
Game notes
Burrell was picked off first base by Alan Mills in the
seventh inning. ... Relaford, who has batted eighth in 37 of the 38
games he has played, has eight RBI in the first five games of the
Phillies' road trip. He had only nine RBI in his other 33 games
this season. ... Lieberthal thought he was hit on the hand with a
pitch from Matt Herges with runners at the corners with one out in
the sixth. Plate umpire Greg Gibson ruled it a foul ball off the
bat handle, provoking a lengthy argument from Phillies manager
Terry Francona. ... Person, who entered the game with the NL's
second-best ERA in road games, saw it jump from 2.08 to 2.90
following his fifth road outing of the season. ... Dodgers RF Shawn
Green committed his second error of the season when he allowed
Jordan's fifth-inning single to elude him.
