GAME LOG
SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Marquis Grissom hit his first homer in 212
at-bats and drove in four runs as the Milwaukee Brewers beat San
Diego 8-3 Monday night, snapping the Padres' four-game winning
streak.
Jimmy Haynes (6-3) gave up seven hits in 8 1/3 innings. He
struck out three and walked two.
Grissom hadn't homered since Sept. 30 against Pittsburgh. He hit
a leadoff shot to center off Brian Meadows (4-4) in the second, and
the Brewers made it 5-0 after three innings.
Grissom hit a two-run double in the seventh and an RBI single in
the ninth to finish 3-for-4 with one walk.
Geoff Jenkins had two hits, scored twice and drove in a run in
his first game back from the disabled list.
Haynes had a hit before the Padres did, doubling with one
out in the second.
Haynes held the Padres hitless until Al Martin homered leading
off the fourth inning. Tony Gwynn followed with a double and scored
on Ryan Klesko's one-out single.
Jenkins, who fractured his right middle finger May 5 when he
lost control of his bat during a swing, was activated earlier in
the day. He provided Milwaukee's first two runs in the first.
Jenkins hit an RBI double on the first pitch he saw from
Meadows, then moved around on two wild pitches.
Charlie Hayes hit an RBI single in the fifth and the Brewers got
another run when Jose Hernandez grounded into a double play.
Meadows lasted just 4 2/3 innings, giving up five runs -- four
earned -- on seven hits, with four strikeouts and four walks.
Game notes
Davey Lopes, who was named Milwaukee's manager on Nov. 4,
was San Diego's first base coach for the last five years. ... To
make room on the roster for Jenkins, INF Kevin Barker was sent to
Triple-A Indianapolis. ... Adam Eaton, one of three pitchers
obtained from Philadelphia for Andy Ashby in November, is scheduled
to start Tuesday night, making his major league debut. He was 4-1
with a 2.68 ERA in 10 starts at Double-A Mobile. The Padres will
purchase his contract Tuesday. Eaton was the clincher to the
deal, and it turns out that he will pitch for the Padres before the
other two pitchers obtained in that deal. RHPs Carlton Loewer
(broken left ankle) and Steve Montgomery (strained shoulder) have
been on the disabled list all season. ... The Padres committed
three errors, giving them 21 in 10 games.
