SAN FRANCISCO (AP) _ Barry Bonds hit his 465th career home run
and Ellis Burks homered in his 35th major league ballpark as the
San Francisco Giants completed a three-game sweep of the
Philadelphia Phillies with a 10-4 victory Wednesday night. Ramon Martinez, filling in at shortstop for the injured Rich
Aurilia, homered and drove in three runs as the Giants won their
eighth straight against the Phillies dating to last year. Bonds' homer tied him with Dave Winfield for 20th on the career
list. Burks' first homer at Pac Bell Ballpark gave him home runs in
35 major league stadiums. Only Mark McGwire and Fred McGriff have
homered in more ballparks. Mark Gardner (4-2) allowed four runs and seven hits in six
innings. He struck out three and didn't walk a batter to win
consecutive starts for the first time since Aug. 14 and 19, 1998. Paul Byrd (1-5) gave up seven runs and 10 hits, walked one and
struck out three as he lost his third straight. It was also his
first career loss to the Giants in four decisions. Ron Gant hit his second homer in as many days for the Phillies,
who have lost five of their last seven. Gant's eighth home run of the season on a 1-1 pitch from Gardner
gave the Phillies a 1-0 lead in the first. Bonds hit a 1-0 pitch from Byrd into the center-field bleachers
for his 20th of the season, and his first since May 25. Burks' homer, a two-run shot into the left-field bleachers, gave
the Giants a 3-1 lead in the second. Philadelphia's Kevin Jordan, playing in place of injured third
baseman Scott Rolen, hit his first homer of the season to cut the
Giants' lead to 5-4 in the sixth. Brian Hunter added an RBI single
in the inning. Martinez's homer came off Byrd, who faced one more batter before
being replaced. Marvin Benard also drove in a run for the Giants in the fourth
and added a two-run single in the ninth off Jeff Brantley, who gave
up three runs in the eighth. Notes: Aurilia got the night off after straining his left
hamstring Tuesday. He's scheduled for further evaluation Thursday.
... Phillies LHP Scott Aldred will have his left shoulder examined
in Philadelphia on Thursday by team doctor Michael Ciccotti. He
missed his second game as a result of the injury suffered Monday.
... The Phillies have not won a series against the Giants in the
last 11. ... The Phillies were 11-7 in interleague play last year,
including a 2-1 record against the Boston Red Sox.
