GAME LOG
SEATTLE (AP) -- Stan Spencer came within one out of his first
major league complete game and Ryan Klesko hit a two-run homer to
lead the San Diego Padres over the Seattle Mariners 7-4 Saturday
night.
Spencer (2-1), making his fifth start since being called up from
Triple-A Las Vegas on May 12, allowed a two-run homer to Mike
Cameron in the sixth, but both runs were unearned because shortstop
Damian Jackson's throwing error that pulled Klesko off first base.
Edgar Martinez (17th) and Jay Buhner (12th) hit solo homers in
the ninth. After Brian Boehringer walked David Bell, Trevor Hoffman
got the final out for his 13th save in 14 chances.
Bret Boone put San Diego ahead with an RBI single in the fourth
off John Halama (6-1) and Klesko made it 3-0 in the sixth with his
10th homer, a 410-foot shot to right following Phil Nevin's single.
It was Klesko's first this year off a left-hander.
San Diego broke open the game with four runs in the seventh. Rob
Ramsay relieved with two on and later walked Klesko with the bases
loaded. Boone then hit a sacrifice fly off Kevin Hodges, Carlos
Hernandez drove in a run with an infield single and Hodges walked
Jackson with the bases loaded.
Spencer, who allowed a franchise-record 10 stolen bases to
Florida on May 18, allowed two to the Mariners. He struck out four
and walked none.
Halama, bidding to become the first Mariners starter to start
7-0, gave up five runs and nine hits in six-plus innings.
Jose Mesa pitched a scoreless ninth in his first appearance
since giving up seven hits in Tampa Bay's 11-run eighth inning last
Sunday.
