GAME LOG
PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Vinny Castilla was relieved to finally come
through in the clutch.
Castilla hit a two-run single off Jason Boyd with two outs in
the 12th inning Monday night, leading the Devil Rays over the
Philadelphia Phillies 5-3.
"To come through like that, it felt great," said Castilla, who
is hitting just .214 this season. "I was looking for something
close to the plate that I could get a good swing on."
Boyd (0-1) walked Randy Winn leading off, Gerald Williams
sacrificed, Mike DiFelice grounded out and Fred McGriff was
intentionally walked. After a wild pitch put runners on second and
third, Castilla lined a single to center.
"You can't downplay the significance of that hit," Devil Rays
manager Larry Rothschild said. "I've seen guys turn things around
with one big hit."
Phillies manager Terry Francona opted to pitch to Castilla even
though first base was open.
"I didn't even think of walking him," Francona said. "I
didn't want to put Boyd in that position."
Mark Guthrie (1-0) pitched two innings of hitless relief, and
Rick White pitched the 12th for his first save. Tampa Bay's bullpen
didn't allow a hit in five innings, and completed a five-hitter.
"We pitched well tonight," Rothschild said. "When we do that
we give ourselves a chance to win games."
Phillies starter Andy Ashby took a one-hitter into the eighth
inning but couldn't hold a 3-1 lead.
Pinch-hitter Steve Cox doubled and third baseman Kevin Jordan
threw wildly past first on Winn's ground for an error that allowed
pinch-runner Ozzie Guillen to score.
Winn, who was credited with a single, took third on the error
and scored on Williams' single.
"The problem was it was a tough play and he had to push to make
it," Francona said. "Then the throw went into no man's land."
Williams was caught stealing but Jose Guillen reached on an
error by shortstop Desi Relaford, who has four errors in the last
three games and 15 this season. Mark Holzemer allowed a single to
McGriff before Wayne Gomes struck out Castilla.
"Bottom line is you want to win the game," Ashby said.
The Devil Rays scored their first run thanks to some nifty
running by McGriff and Castilla, who were on first and second with
one out. Flaherty hit a grounder to second baseman Mickey
Morandini, who charged the ball. Castilla stopped before Morandini
could tag him which forced a throw to first. Castilla got into an
extended rundown as McGriff scored.
Tampa starter Cory Lidle struck out a career-high seven in seven
innings. All three runs he allowed unearned.
Bobby Abreu homered with two outs in the fifth inning after a
throwing error by shortstop Felix Martinez allowed Doug Glanville
to reach and Ron Gant singled.
"Cory made one bad pitch and Abreu hit it out," Rothschild
said. "But he looked good, moved the ball well."
Game notes
Tampa Bay's Greg Vaughn, who has been hampered with a
strained right hamstring and left Sunday's game early, sat out as a
precaution. ... Ashby's five walks were the most he has given up in
a game this season. ... Guthrie has not given up a hit in his last
three outings, walking just two in his six innings. ... Phillies
rookie Pat Burrell was 0-6 with four strikeouts. ... The loss
marked the third time in the last four games the Phillies had
played extra innings.
