PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Luis Sojo and Kevin Young shook off slumps
with home runs Wednesday night to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates over the
Detroit Tigers 4-3.
Todd Ritchie (4-3) won his second straight start, allowing two
runs and five hits in eight innings with six strikeouts. Prior to
beating Kansas City last Friday, Ritchie had one win in his
previous seven starts.
Mike Williams finished for his ninth save in 10 chances,
allowing a one-out RBI single to Rob Fick. With runners on second
and third, Williams struck out Brad Ausmus, then walked Rich Becker
before retiring Damion Easley on a groundout.
With Pittsburgh trailing 2-1 in the fourth, Sojo broke out of a
4-for-31 skid by homering off Hideo Nomo (2-5).
Ritchie singled, Jason Kendall walked with two outs and Wil
Cordero singled for a 3-2 lead.
Young, in a 4-for-30 slump that caused the Pirates to drop him
to sixth in the batting order, homered off C.J. Nitkowski in the
seventh. Young started the year in the cleanup spot, then was
dropped to fifth at the beginning of May. He had struck out three
times against Nomo before the home run.
Run-scoring doubles by Dean Palmer in the second and Deivi Cruz
in the third gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead.
Nomo walked Brian Giles with the bases loaded in the third.
Game notes
Nomo has lost four of his last five decisions. He had been
5-2 against Pittsburgh. ... Nomo was 0-for-2 at the plate, and
Tigers pitchers have one hit in 13 at bats in interleague games.
Willie Blair had the only hit, a single. ... The Pirates were again
without SS Pat Meares (bruised calf) and 2B Warren Morris (bruised
ankle). Both are expected to be ready for the weekend series in
Kansas City. ... Pirates manager Gene Lamont said John Vander Wal
will be the Pirates' designated hitter in the games against the
Royals. Ritchie's previous longest start this year was 7 2/3
innings against San Diego on April 25.
