CHICAGO (AP) -- Ray Durham's RBI single in the 14th inning gave
the White Sox a 6-5 victory over the crosstown rival Cubs on
Friday night -- the longest game of the season for both teams.
With one out, Herbert Perry singled to right and then stole
second. Todd Van Poppel (0-2) walked pinch-hitter Jeff Abbott,
putting runners at first and second with only one out.
Van Poppel was relieved by Daniel Garibay, and Durham sent a 2-1
pitch bouncing down the left field line to score Perry, ending it
after 4 hours, 42 minutes.
Van Poppel gave up one run on two hits in 1 1-3 innings. Jesus
Pena (1-0) walked one and struck out one in two innings.
Sammy Sosa, who had struck out in his first four at-bats, tied
the game at 5 with a two-out, two-run homer in the ninth off closer
Keith Foulke. It was his first homer at Comiskey Park since June 1,
1991, when he was playing for the White Sox.
Sosa also fanned in the 12th, finishing one shy of the club
record, set by Don Hoak in 1956.
It was the third straight game Foulke has given up a run, though
he managed to get the save in the other two.
Frank Thomas and Jose Valentin hit solo home runs for the White
Sox, who improved their AL-best record to 36-23. They've won five
straight and eight of their last nine.
Cubs starter Jon Lieber, 0-1 in his previous two starts despite
giving up only three runs, ran into trouble in the fourth. After
giving up a single to Thomas, Magglio Ordonez hit a deep fly ball
to center. Damon Buford, running back, couldn't make the catch, and
Ordonez had a stand-up triple.
The Cubs tried to get a sliding Thomas at home, but his foot
beat Augie Ojeda's throw for the 1-0 lead. Chris Singleton and
Carlos Lee added RBIs to give the White Sox a 3-0 lead.
Thomas made it 4-1 in the fifth when he homered off of Lieber.
It was his 14th homer of the season and his third in as many games.
Valentin homered in the seventh inning.
Glenallen Hill closed the Cubs to 4-3 when he homered on the
first pitch he saw in the sixth. Hill knew the ball was gone as
soon as he hit it, too, standing calmly at the plate and letting
his bat just drop as the ball sailed into the left-field stands.
Game notes
The crowd of 44,140 was the fourth-largest for a
regular-season game at new Comiskey. The top five crowds at the
ballpark have all been for games with the Cubs. ... The White Sox
have homered in 13 straight games, three short of the club record
set in 1987. ... Former-Cub OF Brant Brown was reacquired before
the game in a three-way trade with the Texas Rangers and Florida
Marlins. Brown is expected to join the Cubs on Saturday.
