TORONTO (AP) -- On a chilly night when two Canadian teams matched
up, Shannon Stewart thanked a Canadian for his record day.
Stewart had four extra-base hits and tied a career high with
four RBIs, and Carlos Delgado hit his AL leading 23rd home run
Friday night to lead the Toronto Blue Jays over the Montreal Expos
13-3.
Stewart went 4-for-5 with a two-run homer and three doubles,
tying a club record set by Roy Howell in 1977 and matched by Damaso
Garcia in 1986.
"Andy Stewart has helped me with my mechanics as far as getting
the right hitting position," said Stewart of the Blue Jays'
bullpen catcher, who is Canadian. "He's helped me a lot."
Chris Carpenter (5-5) allowed three runs, six hits and five
walks in seven innings as Toronto improved to 10-4 against its
Canadian rival.
"It's still special in a hokey way," said catcher Darrin
Fletcher, who used to play for Montreal. "I was freezing. It was
the perfect night for two Canadian teams to match up."
Canadian Paul Quantrill pitched the final two innings for
Toronto. "I had to pitch two innings because other than Carpenter, who
is from New Hampshire, the rest of the guys were looking for
parkas," Quantrill said.
Delgado, who also doubled, has 11 home runs in his last 22 games
and 33 hits in his last 79 at bats (.418).
T.J. Tucker (0-1) gave up five runs and five hits in three
innings. Montreal manager Felipe Alou said the pitcher likely will
go on the disabled list with a strained right forearm.
"I'm still sore," Tucker said.
Lee Stevens' RBI single put the Expos ahead in the fifth, but
Delgado hit a two-run homer in the bottom half and Stewart's
two-run drive made it 4-1 in the second.
Raul Mondesi scored on a wild pitch in the third, but home runs
by Stevens and Chris Widger cut the lead to 5-3 in the fourth.
Homer Bush had an RBI single off Felipe Lira in the bottom half
and Stewart's RBI double in the sixth made it 7-3.
Toronto added six runs with two outs in the seventh on Delgado's
RBI double, Matt Skrmetta's run-scoring wild pitch, Alex Gonzalez's
two-run single, Stewart's RBI double and Bush's run-scoring
single.
