MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Not even three hits and driving in the tying
and winning runs proved satisfying for Marquis Grissom.
"I'm still not satisfied with the way I'm playing," Grissom
said Saturday night after leading the Milwaukee Brewers to a 3-2
victory over the New York Mets.
Grissom, who had three hits to raise his average to .260, had a
two-run single in the sixth inning as the Brewers took advantage of
some uncharacteristic wildness by Glendon Rusch (4-5) in ending a
nine-game home losing streak against the Mets.
John Snyder (2-2) allowed both runs and seven hits in seven
innings, Curtis Leskanic pitched the eighth and Bob Wickman closed
with a perfect ninth for his eighth save. The Brewers won despite
getting outhit 9-4.
"That was a big win tonight," Wickman said. "They've kind of
owned us the last two or three years."
The Mets, who had won nine straight at County Stadium, are 17-4
all-time against the Brewers, who joined the NL in 1998.
Ron Belliard's first-inning homer off Rusch drove in the game's
first run, and the Milwaukee second baseman also made some
outstanding defensive plays.
He made a spectacular dive with Jay Payton on and no outs in the
second inning, coming up with a hard Melvin Mora grounder behind
second and flipping to shortstop Luis Lopez for a forceout at
second. Snyder retired the next two hitters to escape the jam.
Belliard and Lopez combined on a nifty double play in the sixth
on another smash by Mora.
"The defense behind me was unbelievable," Snyder said. "The
double play and the dive ... awesome plays."
Rusch, who entered tied for the NL for fewest walks per nine
innings (1.3), walked six in 6 1-3 innings. But he allowed only
three runs and three hits, two by Grissom, before Turk Wendell
relieved.
"I don't know if I've ever been that off," said Rusch, who
allowed only three hits before being pulled in the seventh after
issuing his sixth walk. "I guess I can get a mulligan and go back
out there next time and hopefully not be all over the place."
Payton's RBI single tied the score in the second, Jason Tyner
led off the fifth with a single and scored from first on Mike
Piazza's two-out single to right-center, beating Belliard's
off-line relay.
But Rusch couldn't hold the 2-1 lead. He hit Luis Lopez and
walked Charlie Hayes -- both former Mets -- starting the sixth. The
runners advanced on a groundout by Jeromy Burnitz, another former
Met, and scored on Grissom's ground single between first and
second.
"It's nice to see (Grissom) get hot," manager Davey Lopes
said. "That takes a lot of pressure off some of the other guys."
After Leskanic gave up singles to Piazza and Robin Ventura
opening the eighth, Todd Zeile popped out, Payton struck out and
pinch-hitter Matt Franco lined to Belliard.
"They cashed in when they had to," New York manager Bobby
Valentine said. "We didn't have any great scoring opportunities
tonight."
Game notes
Beillard's home run on Rusch's first pitch was the first
leadoff homer of the season for the Brewers. ... Milwaukee is 9-14
against the NL East this year. ... After signing OF Jonah
McClanahan of Monterey (Calif.) High School (18th round) and RHP
Jeremy Shorey of Lisbon, Maine (29th), the Brewers have signed 18
of their 49 picks. ... C Henry Blanco made his first start in June
after missing two weeks while spending time in Venezuela with his
father, who dies June 10. Blanco threw out Melvin Mora trying to
steal second in the fifth. He has thrown out six of his last seven
and is 13 for 23 this season on steal attempts.
