GAME LOG
BALTIMORE (AP) -- Rookie Seth Etherton did more than stop Albert
Belle's home run binge. He pretty much had his way with the rest of
the Baltimore Orioles, too.
Troy Glaus and Darin Erstad homered to back a fine pitching
performance by Etherton as the Anaheim Angels defeated the Orioles
8-6 Sunday.
Belle, who homered in each of his previous four games, went
0-for-4. It was only the second time in 19 games he failed to get a
hit.
Against Etherton, Belle hit into a fielder's choice, popped out
and hit a fly to center.
"Seth did a good job changing speeds on him," Angels manager
Mike Scioscia said. "He made some good pitches away, moved the
ball around. A couple he got into Albert's zone he popped one
straight up and fouled one back, so you have to credit Seth."
Etherton (2-1), pitching in his fifth major-league game, took a
two-hitter into the seventh before tiring. He gave up four runs on
four hits in 6 1/3 innings, walking two and striking out three, to
win his second straight start.
Stopping Belle, who had 16 RBI in his last four games, was the
key.
"I know how dangerous he is. I made pretty good pitches on
him," the 23-year-old Etherton said. "I knew I had to bear down,
I had to move it in and out. That third at-bat he hit it pretty
darn hard but right at Garrett (Anderson)."
Belle looked at a third strike from Shigetoshi Hasegawa in the
eighth.
Troy Percival got the final three outs for his 17th save in 21
chances, despite yielding Brady Anderson's sacrifice fly. He got
Delino DeShields to ground out with runners on first and second to
end the game.
Belle's run is over, but Glaus appears to be just getting
started. His three-run homer off Scott Erickson (3-4) was his
second in two games and the key blow in a five-run third inning.
"You're hitting a round ball with a round bat. If it gets up,
they go," Glaus said. "An eighth of an inch difference and it's a
line drive."
Mo Vaughn went 3-for-4 with a walk and an RBI for the Angels,
who won the last two games of the three-game series and went 4-2 at
Camden Yards this year. It's the first time since 1978 they
finished above .500 against the Orioles on the road.
Charles Johnson and Jeff Conine homered for Baltimore, which
went 6-3 on the homestand despite losing the final two games.
"We're playing well right now," Orioles manager Mike Hargrove
said. "A 6-3 homestand, that's a good nine-game stretch."
The Angels got five hits in the third inning, the big blow
Glaus' 20th homer. After Vaughn singled in a run and Garret
Anderson hit a sacrifice fly, Glaus emphatically ended his 0-for-13
skid against Erickson with a shot into the Angels bullpen.
"He's tough on right-handers, he has that sinker, he's not easy
to hit," Glaus said. "That's why he's one of the top couple
pitchers in the league."
Johnson hit his 13th homer in the Orioles' half after Etherton
walked Harold Baines. Erstad matched that in the fourth.
Orlando Palmeiro chased Erickson with an RBI single in the
sixth.
Erickson allowed eight runs and 11 hits in 5 2/3 innings in
falling to 16-5 lifetime against the Angels. He has a 6.88 ERA in
nine starts this year.
"They didn't hit the ball hard except for those two homers,"
Hargrove said.
Baines and Brady Anderson hit RBI singles in the seventh to make
it 8-4. Conine led off the ninth with a homer off Hasegawa, who was
also charged with Baltimore's last run.
