GAME LOG
CHICAGO (AP) -- Montreal manager Felipe Alou has a new batch of
pitchers to choose from, and so far, so good.
Michael Barrett hit a game-tying, two-run single in the seventh
inning and drew a bases-loaded walk in the 11th Sunday to lead the
Expos over the Chicago Cubs 4-3.
Anthony Telford (5-3) pitched a hitless inning and Brad Rigby,
called up June 17 from Triple-A Ottawa, got the final out in the
11th for his first save with the Expos.
With the game tied at 3, Vladimir Guerrero hit a broken-bat
single off Daniel Garibay (1-3) in the 11th and advanced on Lee
Stevens' groundout.
Garibay threw a wild pitch, then walked Geoff Blum, Chris Widger
and Barrett, forcing in the go-ahead run.
"I couldn't find my control and I just don't know what
happened," Garibay said through an interpreter.
"Today, Garibay just didn't throw strikes," said Cubs manager
Don Baylor, whose bullpen was shorthanded because of repeated use.
Alou called on Julio Santana, acquired from Triple-A Pawtucket
and signed Sunday, Scott Forster, who joined the team Saturday from
Ottawa, and then Rigby in the 11th.
"I can't even start to say what was going through my head,"
Forster said. "I never knew if this would ever happen (getting to
the big leagues) or where."
Santana gave up a one-out double to Mark Grace but he was
stranded at third as Rigby got Joe Girardi to ground out and end
the game.
"I tried not to think about the situation," Rigby said. "When
you do that, the outcome might not be quite the same."
"I like this truckload of pitchers better than any other
truckload of pitchers we've received yet," Alou said. "They got
three big outs."
The biggest outs might have been in the Cubs 10th. With one out
and Eric Young at first, Brant Brown flied out to center field.
Young, thinking the ball had been trapped by Peter Bergeron, was
nearly at second base and was thrown out for an inning-ending
double play.
Young was looking at second base umpire John Shulock for a
signal but it was third base umpire Rocky Roe who made the call.
"Normally, you look at the second base umpire, you don't look
at third," Young said. "I think there was confusion about who was
going to call it. I'm looking at the umpire right there (at
second). Then I looked at third base and his call was delayed."
Cubs starter Jon Lieber gave up three runs and six hits in seven
innings. He has worked at least seven innings in his last seven
starts.
Javier Vazquez allowed three runs on eight hits in six innings,
striking out seven and walking none.
Guerrero hit a sacrifice fly in the first to score Bergeron, who
had a leadoff double.
Sammy Sosa tied it in the bottom half with his 20th homer, and
Willie Greene hit a two-run double in the fourth for a 3-1 lead.
Barrett singled in the seventh following a leadoff single by
Guerrero and Blum's walk.
"Everytime I came up, I kept laughing to myself," Barrett
said. "It felt good to have an opportunity. It felt like it was my
day."
Game notes
Sosa's homer was his first since June 9 when he hit a
game-tying two-run homer in the ninth against the White
Sox. He also singled in the fifth and is five hits shy of reaching
1,500. ... Montreal designated RHP Matt Skrmetta for assignment and
signed RHP Julio Santana. ... The Expos are 2-0 in extra inning
games.
