MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Rick Reed not only got a decision, he got one he
liked.

Kurt Abbott hit a three-run homer and Reed recovered after
allowing a leadoff home run for his first victory in more than seven
weeks as the New York Mets defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 7-3
Sunday.
Reed (4-1), who yielded Ron Belliard's homer, allowed three runs
on seven hits in seven innings for his first win since April 29. He
had six straight no-decisions after losing on May 4. The Mets were
3-3 in those games.
"It's totally different if the team wins," Reed said. "If I
get a no-decision and we win, I'm fine, but if we lose, I feel like
I could have done something better, something different."
Belliard led off with a home run for the second consecutive
game.
Jason Bere (4-6) allowed five runs on five hits in five innings
with all the runs coming in the fourth inning.
"He had one bad inning," Brewers manager Davey Lopes said.
"Unfortunately, he made several mistakes and that cost us the
ballgame."
Abbott's homer capped a five-run fourth as the Mets took a 5-1
lead. Matt Franco and Edgardo Alfonzo opened with consecutive
singles and Mike Piazza followed with an RBI double to left to make
it 1-1. Robin Ventura was walked intentionally and Jay Payton's
sacrifice fly scored Alfonzo.
After Benny Agbayani reached on a fielder's choice, forcing
Ventura at second, Abbott hit the first pitch 405 feet to left for
his third home run.
"It makes you feel good when you're able to give your pitcher a
big lead that early in the game," Abbott said.
Milwaukee cut it to 5-2 in the sixth when Geoff Jenkins and
Jeromy Burnitz singled. Jenkins scored when Charlie Hayes grounded
into a double play.
The Mets added an unearned run in the seventh on Alfonzo's
sacrifice fly.
The Brewers pulled within 6-3 in the seventh on a one-out double
by Henry Blanco, who scored when Belliard's sinking liner to right
eluded Agbayani's dive and bounced past for a triple.
"We had a lot of time to come back," Belliard said. "We had a
lot of guys on base, but it wouldn't happen."
Ventura's 14th home run to lead off the eighth closed the
scoring.
