MONTREAL (AP) -- The Montreal Expos homered their way to a rare
win over Tom Glavine.
Jose Vidro, Chris Widger and Lee Stevens homered as Montreal
stopped Glavine's 13-game winning streak against the Expos, beating
the Atlanta Braves 6-4 Tuesday night.
Glavine (7-5), who hadn't lost to Montreal in 18 starts since
Aug. 25, 1992, allowed eight hits in six innings, including homers
to Vidro and Widger in the first and Stevens in the third.
"Things have gone well for me here, but tonight wasn't one of
those nights, unfortunately," Glavine said.
Glavine hadn't allowed three homers in the same game since
allowing three to Pittsburgh on July 29, 1991. He gave up six runs,
including four in the first inning.
"They're playing good baseball," Glavine said. "They're a
good club, and we knew that coming in here, and we knew that we had
to play well. We didn't do it tonight so we'll have to do a better
job of it tomorrow."
Stevens also hit three doubles and went 4-for-4 to raise his
average from .251 to .263.
"I'm just glad we won the game," Stevens said. "It's nice to
get a few hits but we played a good game tonight, pitched well, and
we ended up getting the first game of the series so it was a big
win for us."
Expos starter Tony Armas Jr. (3-5) allowed two hits -- including
Chipper Jones' 19th homer -- and one run in 5 1-3 innings before
leaving due to a blister on his right middle finger with a 2-0
count on Jones in the sixth.
"It started bothering me if the fifth inning," Armas said. "I
tried to do the best I could to go out there but it just rubbed too
much on it. I've just got to heal that finger up and be ready for
my next start."
Steve Kline pitched a perfect ninth for his ninth save in 10
chances, taking over the team lead from injured closer Ugueth
Urbina.
"It's nothing special," Kline said. "In about another week
Ugie will be back and he'll be taking it over and hopefully he gets
50 by the end of the season."
It was Montreal's 1,000th win at Olympic Stadium.
Stevens doubled in the first, hit his 17th homer in the third -- the 99th of his career -- and doubled in the sixth. He is 23-for-74
(.310) against left-handers this season.
"It doesn't matter to me if the pitcher's a left-hander or
right-hander," Stevens said. "I don't know what I'm doing against
left-handers but it's never bothered me if it's left-handed or
right-handed. The guy still has to throw strikes and I still have
to try to be as patient as I can and get good swings on the ball."
He added a double off reliever Jason Marquis with in the eighth.
Vidro followed Wilton Guerrero's leadoff single in the first
with his career-high 13th homer, putting Montreal ahead 2-0. Widger
homered two outs later, then Stevens doubled and scored as Jones
threw wildly to first, his eighth error of the season.
After Stevens' homer in the third, Jones' homer cut the lead to
5-1 in the fourth. Orlando Cabrera hit an RBI double in the sixth.
Wally Joyner singled home a run in the three-run eighth that
also included Wally Joyner's RBI single, third baseman Mike
Mordecai's throwing error, and Jones' sacrifice fly.
Game notes
Glavine was 3-11 with a 4.92 ERA in 17 starts against
Montreal before beginning his winning streak with a 1-0 win over
the Expos at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium on May 19, 1993. ...
Stevens tied the team record of three doubles in a game, previously
achieved 26 times. ... Vladimir Guerrero singled in the fifth for
his 100th hit of the season. ... The Expos placed RH Carl Pavano on
the 15-day disabled list following the game with right triceps
tendinitis. Julio Santana will start in his place Saturday night
against Florida. RHP Guillermo Mota was recalled from Triple-A
Ottawa.
