GAME LOG
CHICAGO (AP) -- White Sox manager Jerry Manuel thought there was
plenty of blame to go around for Chicago's 10-1 loss to the
Minnesota Twins on Thursday.
"I thought defensively we didn't play well. We didn't pitch
well. We didn't hit," Manuel said. "You always point at pitching,
but we were just bad."
And Eric Milton was good. Milton improved to 8-2 by allowing five hits in seven innings, and Jay Canizaro had a career-high four hits, including a solo homer, to lead the Twins.
Corey Koskie hit a two-run homer, and Ron Coomer and Marcus
Jensen each drove in two runs for the Twins, who won for the fifth
time in eight games. Minnesota had 16 hits, including three by
Midre Cummings, off five Chicago pitchers.
The White Sox, coming off 11 wins in 14 games against the New
York Yankees and Cleveland, lost two of three to the last-place
Twins. It was Chicago's first series loss since May 24-25 against
the Yankees.
"It's just two games in the middle of 162," White Sox first
baseman Paul Konerko said.
"If we won the series, I don't think we get anything for
winning it. We just have to come back tomorrow. I still wouldn't
trade where we are for where anyone else is in the league."
Coomer thought winning two of three against the team with the
best record in baseball was a big deal.
"(The White Sox) had put it to the Yankees, and they put it to
Cleveland, and they had really played good baseball," Coomer said.
"It's good for a young team like ours to come in and play a team
that's on a roll and play them good. Maybe that can help us take
another step."
Milton is now 5-0 with a 1.72 ERA in five daytime starts. He
walked one and struck out six in matching his single-season high of
eight wins, set in 1998. Milton won seven games last season.
"Double figures (in victories) is something I wanted to shoot
for this year," Milton said. "I've had a career high in wins
already before the All-Star break. That's a plus. We'll keep going
from here."
Kip Wells (4-7) lost for the fourth time in five decisions, and
Manuel said he'll meet with the staff to decide whether to keep
Wells in the rotation. Wells gave up five runs and seven hits in
three innings, and has failed to pitch past the fifth inning in
four of his last five starts.
"I thought he threw the ball well, I thought he had good
stuff," Manuel said. "His confidence is a little shaken. I have
all the confidence in the world in Kip."
Canizaro and Cummings singled to start the Twins' first.
Canizaro advanced on a flyout and scored on a wild pitch on ball
four to Coomer.
Koskie walked to load the bases and Russ Ortiz hit a sacrifice
fly to score Cummings. Jensen blooped a double over shortstop Tony
Graffanino in shallow center to make it 4-0. Coomer added an RBI
single in the second.
After an RBI single by Mark Johnson made it 5-1 in the bottom of
the second, the Twins added three more runs in the fourth.
Canizaro led off against Sean Lowe with his fourth home run.
Cummings singled and scored one out later on Coomer's double to go
ahead 7-1.
Lawton hit an RBI single and Koskie hit his fourth home run in
the eighth.
Game notes Chicago second baseman Ray Durham had to leave the game
because he felt a twinge in his left side after a defensive play.
... Wells is 1-3 with a 6.12 ERA over his last six starts. He also
dropped to 0-6 in seven daytime starts. ... Koskie, whose
career-high 13-game hitting streak ended Wednesday, started a new
one with a single in the fourth. ... The Twins are 10-14 in day
games. ... Minnesota improved to 5-5 on its current 13-game road
trip.
