MILWAUKEE (AP) _ Jeff D'Amico came off the disabled list to
dominate the Cubs, allowing two hits over eight innings as the
Milwaukee Brewers beat Chicago 4-0 Saturday night. D'Amico (3-4), who had been on the 15-day DL with tendinitis in
his pitching arm, took a no-hitter into the sixth inning. He missed all but one inning of the last two seasons after two
major arm surgeries, but the right-hander's highly successful
comeback hit its highest point with an overpowering victory over
Chicago. Eric Young broke up D'Amico's no-hit bid with a solid one-out
single to right in the sixth. Young, who reached base a club-record
seven times in Chicago's win Friday night, advanced to second on a
flyout but was stranded when Sammy Sosa grounded out. Willie Greene's seventh-inning single to center was Chicago's
only other hit off D'Amico, who walked one and struck out four.
With D'Amico on a pitch count because of his sore arm, Curtis
Leskanic pitched the ninth. Milwaukee broke a scoreless tie when Jeromy Burnitz hit a
two-out double in the fourth and Charlie Hayes singled him home.
The Brewers added three more runs in the eighth when Geoff Jenkins
hit a two-run triple and scored on a wild pitch by Felix Heredia. D'Amico's performance overshadowed a solid outing from Ismael
Valdes (1-2), who held the Brewers to eight hits, seven of them
singles, over seven innings. Valdes, who got no decisions in his
previous four starts, struck out five and walked only one. In front of another big crowd at the Brewers' weekend series
with their self-proclaimed archrivals, Milwaukee and Chicago played
a game that looked nothing like the Cubs' 7-4 victory Friday night,
which took 15 innings and more than 5 1/2 hours to play. Since the Brewers used all seven relievers in their bullpen in
that game, they needed a strong outing from D'Amico. He responded
by allowing just two runners to reach second base and working
quickly; Saturday's game ended in 2:22. Jeff Reed reached base on a third-inning error by Tyler Houston.
He was the Cubs' only other baserunner against D'Amico. Notes: The County Stadium crowd of 37,176 was the Brewers' biggest
since opening day. ... Chicago lost for the ninth time in 12 games.
The Cubs' 12-game road trip concludes Sunday. ... Before the game,
the Brewers signed third-round pick Dane Artman, a right-hander
from Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Milwaukee has signed 24 of its 49 picks
in last month's draft. ... Friday night's marathon was the Cubs'
15th extra-inning game already this year. Chicago is 5-10 in those
games.
