SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Rich Aurilia figured the San Francisco
Giants were due for a win in their own ballpark against the Los
Angeles Dodgers. He helped deliver it, too.
Aurilia went 3-for-4, including a two-run homer, and Kirk Rueter
pitched six shutout innings as the Giants defeated the Dodgers 4-1
Saturday for the first time at Pacific Bell Park in five tries.
"It was about time we came through and beat these guys," said
Aurilia. "They pretty much pounded us every game so far. It was
nice to turn it around and actually win a close game."
Ramon Martinez also hit a two-run homer for the Giants, who
snapped a three-game losing streak.
Rueter (6-4) allowed seven hits with two walks and two
strikeouts, and left after throwing 95 pitches. It was his fourth
consecutive victory in six starts.
"Kirk has always been a big-game pitcher," said Giants manager
Dusty Baker. "They hit some balls hard off him, but he kept it in
the ballpark. He threw an outstanding game. He worked quickly and
kept our defense sharp."
Said Rueter: "The defense played great. That's what I need to
be successful."
Robb Nen struck out the side in the ninth for his 13th save in
17 opportunities. Carlos Perez (4-4) gave up four runs on nine hits. He hasn't won
since May 20 at Florida, a span of nine starts that includes six
no-decisions.
"He pitched well. We just couldn't get him any runs," said
Dodgers manager Davey Johnson. "We didn't get anything against
Rueter. He got a lot of groundballs and we hit into three double
plays early which set the tone. We'd get something going, but then
we'd get wiped out."
The Dodgers had runners on base in every inning. The Giants
turned double plays in each of the first three innings.
In the Giants third, Calvin Murray reached base on a forceout
and was balked to second. Martinez followed with a drive over the
left-field fence for his fifth home run of the year.
"The balk may have gotten him rattled," said Dodger first
baseman Eric Karros. "The toughest part of the day was we just
didn't score runs. Carlos threw well, but Rueter just pitched a
better ballgame."
Aurilia hit his seventh homer of the season in the fourth on a
3-2 delivery from Perez, scoring Ellis Burks, who had singled.
Burks scored his 1,000th career run.
The Dodgers scored in the seventh against reliever John
Johnstone. Kevin Elster led off with a double and eventually scored
on a sacrifice fly by F.P. Santangelo.
Game notes
Dodgers RHP Mike Fetters, who had his suspension for his
part in the Wrigley Field incident in May reduced from four games
to one, has withdrawn his appeal and will serve the suspension on
July 21. ... RHP Gregg Olson pitched one scoreless inning for Class
A San Bernardino on Friday in his first rehab outing for the
Dodgers in nearly a month. ... The Giants are 2-4 in an 11-game
stretch against NL West opponents. ... OF Gary Sheffield is a
career .480 hitter against Rueter. ... Giants OF Marvin Benard
grounded out in a pinch hitting appearance to snap a 10-game
hitting streak. ... Elster, who has been bothered by a sore
hamstring, was taken out in the seventh as a precaution.
