KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- In a season like this, even six-run
deficits are little problem for the Chicago White Sox.
"One of the characteristics of this team is that they keep
battling back," Chicago manager Jerry Manuel said Monday night
after an eight-run fifth inning led the White Sox over the Kansas
City Royals 14-10.
"They continue to get the tying run to the plate," Manuel
said. "It's been very rare that we haven't at least got the tying
run to the plate after being down."
Paul Konerko and Chris Singleton each had two hits during the
fifth in Chicago's biggest comeback since July 5, 1998, when the
White Sox erased a nine-run deficit before losing 15-14 at Boston.
Chicago became the first major league team to win 12 straight
road games since Detroit opened the 1984 season 17-0 on the road.
Ray Durham of the White Sox was 4-for-6 with two RBI, two
steals and three runs. Frank Thomas was 3-for-4 with a home run, a
double, two walks and three RBI.
Chicago had a season-high 22 hits, including at least one by
each starter. Every starter scored at least one run.
Kansas City's Jorge Fabregas was 2-for-3 with a grand slam and a
career-high six RBI.
"Jorge has had two huge home runs in the last few nights and
they've stood for nothing," Royals manager Tony Muser said. "We
had a tough night. The club is playing hard and busting their ... .
We had a good chance to win, but didn't."
Jesus Pena (2-1), the third of six White Sox pitchers, won with
1 1/3 hitless innings.
Trailing 9-3 against Jay Witasick, Chicago loaded the bases in
the fifth on a leadoff walk by Magglio Ordonez and singles by
Konerko and Singleton.
"We had good at-bats," Manuel said. "I think that was
initiated with a walk to Magglio Ordonez, who got behind 0-2. He
battled back.
"That was an indication that the guys weren't giving away at
bats. Their pitcher had a high pitch count going into that inning.
To make him work that much harder made it a difficult inning for
him."
Carlos Lee had an RBI single and Herbert Perry reached when his
grounder got passed third baseman Joe Randa for an error that
allowed two runs to score.
Jose Santiago (6-3) relieved Witasick, who gave up eight runs --
seven earned -- and 10 hits in four-plus innings -- and RBI singles
by Brook Fordyce and Durham pulled Chicago within a run.
Jose Valentin reached on bunt single that loaded the bases,
Frank Thomas forced in the go-ahead run with a walk and, after
Ordonez lined out to center, Konerko singled for an 11-9 lead.
Brett Laxton relieved and allowed a single to Singleton that
reloaded the bases, but Lee grounded into an inning-ending double
play.
Thomas hit a two-run homer in the first, but the Royals took a
4-2 lead in the second on Fabregas' two-run, two-out double and RBI
singles by Rey Sanchez and Johnny Damon.
Perry's RBI single in the third pulled Chicago within a run, but
the Royals made it 8-3 in the fourth when Kevin Bierne relieved Cal
Eldred with the bases loaded and Fabregas hit his first career
slam.
Eldred gave up eight runs and six hits in 2 1/3 innings.
"I'd like to say I just put them through a test to see if they
could come back," he said. "I just couldn't find my release
point. I tried too hard to find it. Sometimes you just need to back
off a little bit.
"But the thing is, when I left the dugout, there were a lot of
guys slapping me on the back, saying they were going to come back.
They not only want to do well for themselves, but for their
teammates."
Quinn's homer in the bottom of the fifth pulled the Royals to
11-10, but the White Sox added three in the sixth on Durham's RBI
double and Ordonez's two-run double.
"We're a good offensive club when we're patient," Manuel said.
"If we can hit the doubles and take the walks, then we're doing
well. Our philosophy is to get the opposing pitchers into deep
counts and wear them down. Then we try to match bullpens."

Kansas City CF Carlos Beltran left in the fifth with
soreness in his right knee. ... Thomas' leadoff double in the third
inning was his 336th, moving him past Nellie Fox into second on the
Chicago career list behind Luke Appling, who had 440. His three
RBIs moved him to within six of Appling, who holds the club record
with 1,116. ... Fabregas' slam was the second of the season for
Kansas City. Jermaine Dye connected against Tampa Bay's Ryan Rupe
on April 26.
