ATLANTA (AP) -- Chipper Jones was thinking bad thoughts after
only two innings Tuesday night.
The Braves were trailing 2-0, manager Bobby Cox had been ejected
and Atlanta was coming off its worst outing of the season, a 17-1
loss to Montreal on Monday night.
"Oh, no. Here we go again," Jones said he was thinking
before he delivered a home run, a double and drove in three runs as
Greg Maddux and the Braves rallied to beat the Expos 7-3.
"But Maddux started to bear down and we had the big sixth
inning," said Jones, who had a two-run double in the inning
followed by another one by Walt Weiss to give the Braves a 5-3
lead.
Andruw Jones had three hits for Atlanta, including his 22nd home
run in the eighth inning. Chipper Jones followed with his 20th
homer, both off reliever Anthony Telford.
Cox was ejected by home plate umpire Derryl Cousins in the
second inning. Cox then bumped Cousins' side with his
elbow as he followed the umpire halfway down the third base line.
Cox was unavailable after the game, showering and leaving to
beat the crowd of 47,277, Atlanta's 11th sellout of the season,
which stayed for the annual fireworks display at the park.
Maddux (10-3) allowed six hits, three runs -- two earned -- walked
one and struck out four in seven innings.
"I hadn't been pitching the way I like to, so it was nice to
feel comfortable again," said Maddux, who settled down after
giving up runs in the first two innings, including getting into a
jawing match with Cousins on a 1-2 pitch that the plate umpire
called a ball.
"I think I was pressing a bit after my last game (two innings,
seven hits and seven runs in a 9-1 loss Saturday against the New
York Mets)," said Maddux. I kind of snapped at the umpire. I
shouldn't have done it. I should have used better judgment."
John Rocker worked a perfect ninth for Atlanta. It was his first
appearance since last Thursday, having been sidelined by a broken
callus on his pitching hand.
Trailing 3-1 in the sixth, the Braves came back against Dustin
Hermanson (6-6), who had held Atlanta to three hits entering the
inning.
Quilvio Veras opened the inning with a double and took third on
a single by Andruw Jones.
Chipper Jones, who earlier Tuesday was named the NL All-Star
starter at third base, then doubled off the glove of a diving
Rondell White on the warning track in left field, scoring both
runners.
Brian Jordan drew a one-out walk and, after a forceout, Weiss,
who had three hits, doubled down the right-field line, scoring two
more runs for the 5-3 lead.
"It was so humid. It just crushed me in that inning," said
Hermanson, who went 5 2/3 innings. He gave up seven hits, five
runs, walked one and struck out three in the 90-degree heat.
"I was in good shape until then. I'm not trying to use that as
an excuse. It was just one of those games when they got to me in
one inning."
Atlanta's first run came on a homer by Bobby Bonilla in the
second inning.
The Expos scored a run in the first on an RBI single by Lee
Stevens, added another in the second on a run-scoring double by
Orlando Cabrera and made it 3-1 in the fifth with an unearned run.
Peter Bergeron reached on a one-out error when first baseman
Andres Galarraga dropped a throw from shortstop Weiss. Bergeron
stole second, took third on a single by Jose Vidro and scored on a
two-out single by Vladimir Guerrero.
Game notes
It was the fourth time this season Cox had been throw out
of a game for arguing. ... In his last five starts prior to Tuesday
night, Maddux was 2-2 with a 5.24 ERA, including his worst outing
of the year when he went only two innings in Saturday's 9-1 loss to
New York, giving up seven hits and seven runs. ... Montreal
pitchers Ugueth Urbina and Carl Pavano will be accompanied by head
trainer Ron McClain when they visit with Dr. James Andrews in
Birmingham, Ala., on Wednesday. Urbina will likely undergo surgery Thursday to remove a bone chip from his right elbow and will
miss the season. Pavano, placed on the DL June 27 with right elbow
tendinitis, will have his elbow checked.
