PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Mike Mussina didn't need many runs Friday
night.
Mussina, the victim of poor run support all season, struck out
10 over eight innings and outpitched Curt Schilling as the
Baltimore Orioles defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 2-1.
Mussina (6-7) allowed one run, seven hits and walked three to
earn his first win since June 16.
"Every game, it seems the game is on the line with every pitch
I throw," Mussina said. "It wears on you. I'd like to see a
handful of runs every now and then. Maybe next time I'll get four
or six. If not, I'll try to win with two."
Schilling (4-5) pitched his second complete game, allowing two
runs and seven hits. He struck out eight and walked one.
"Schill was outstanding, but unfortunately for us, so was
Mussina," Phillies manager Terry Francona said.
Buddy Groom got one out and Mike Timlin recorded the final two
outs for his eighth save.
Albert Belle gave Baltimore a 2-1 lead in the sixth with a
one-out single that scored Mike Bordick, who doubled to lead off
the inning.
"You saw two of the best pitchers in the game," Baltimore
manager Mike Hargrove said. "Once Mike got out of the first couple
innings, he settled down and hit his spots."
Mussina pitched out of trouble in the early innings. He struck
out Mickey Morandini with the bases loaded to end the first, then
retired Morandini on a liner with two runners on to end the third.
The Orioles have scored just 64 runs in Mussina's 19 starts, an
average of 3.4 a game, the fourth-lowest run support in the league.
Mussina allowed just two earned runs combined in his previous
two starts, but did not record a decision. He has allowed three
runs or fewer in 13 starts, but is just 6-2 in those games.
In his last 10 starts, Mussina has allowed two runs or less nine
times, and is 5-2 over that span.
"We were lucky to scratch out a few runs, got some big hits,"
Mussina said. "It's the kind of baseball we were hoping to play."
Mike Lieberthal gave the Phillies a 1-0 lead with an RBI single
in the first, but Baltimore tied it in the second on Greg Myers'
RBI single.
B.J. Surhoff led off the second with a bloop double to right
that fell between Morandini and right fielder Bobby Abreu. Surhoff
moved to third on a groundout and scored on Myers' liner to center.
Several scouts attended the game to watch Schilling and Mussina,
both former All-Stars who have been the subject of trade rumors.
Schilling retired 11 of 12 at one point and had his fifth
straight strong outing after a tough start.
"It's always frustrating to lose a game like this, but the only
blame you can put on this one is Mike Mussina because he outpitched
me," Schilling said. "When you get in a game with guys like that,
you have to dial it up a notch. He did and I didn't."
The Phillies stranded eight runners in scoring position. Pat
Burrell doubled with two outs in the eighth, but Morandini lined
out to third to end the inning.
Game notes
Baltimore optioned right-hander Jason Johnson to Triple-A
Rochester after the game, and recalled right-hander Gabe Molina.
... Phillies starter Robert Person, out with a strained shoulder,
threw from the mound Friday for the second time since going on the
disabled list June 19. He threw about 50 pitches and said he felt
good. He will face hitters Sunday. ... Morandini stranded five
runners in his first two at-bats and six total. ... Phillies OF
Doug Glanville has hit in eight straight games, batting .375
(15-for-40) in that span. ... Bordick extended his hitting streak
to nine games, batting .405 (15-for-37) in that span.
