GAME LOG
MIAMI (AP) -- It was a win even the Florida Marlins weren't
pleased with.
The Marlins overcame a season-high four errors to beat the Tampa
Bay Devil Rays 6-5 Saturday night, when Esteban Yan walked
Preston Wilson with the bases loaded in the eighth inning.
Both managers called for closed-door meetings after game.
"That's the worse game I've been associated with as a Florida
Marlin," manager John Boles said.
"It looked a lot like a Little League game out there," said
Bubba Trammell, who hit into a game-ending double play in the ninth
inning. "They tried to give it to us, but we didn't take it."
After the Devil Rays came back from a 4-0 deficit to take a 5-4
lead in the eighth, reliever Rick White (3-5) gave up a leadoff
single to pinch-hitter Mark Smith which started the Marlins'
two-run winning rally.
After Dave Berg and Luis Castillo walked to load the bases, Mark
Guthrie came on. Mark Kotsay hit a one-hop smash to third base that
Vinny Castilla couldn't handle for an error that tied the game.
"That was ugly," Tampa Bay manager Larry Rothschild said.
"It's a hard-hit ball to Vinny that he needed to react to catch
it, glove it or not and he didn't."
Antonio Alfonseca picked up his major league-leading 27th save
in 30 opportunities.
"It was a Little League game, throwing the ball all over the
place, missing signs, everything," Boles said. "It was a
nightmare. Hopefully, we'll win tomorrow and rest during the
All-Star break -- not going to the beach or shopping malls like
people want them to do, I want the guys to pack themselves in ice
for three days and get ready for the Yankees."
Tied at 4 in the eighth, Castilla singled off Armando Almanza.
Braden Looper (3-1) relieved and John Flaherty singled for his
third hit. Castilla was then forced at third but Russ Johnson
walked to load the bases. Looper threw a wild pitch, allowing
Flaherty to score and give Tampa Bay a 5-4 lead.
"I didn't deserve the win," Looper said. "I had the guy where
I wanted and let it slip away, but the guys picked me up."
Castillo had three hits, including two doubles, and scored two
runs to help Florida take a 4-0 lead after five innings.
But the four errors and a run-scoring passed ball helped Tampa
tie the game at 4 in the seventh.
Marlins left fielder Cliff Floyd made a throwing error and
booted a single for back-to-back errors in the sixth, allowing
Gerald Williams to score on Miguel Cairo's single.
After consecutive walks loaded the bases, Ricky Bones came on
and got Castilla to pop out to third. However, Mike Lowell's throw
to Bones, who was covering third, got loose and Cairo scored to
make it 4-2.
Felix Martinez singled to start the seventh, and went to third
on pinch-hitter Jose Guillen's infield single that Castillo threw
away. Cairo's sacrifice fly made it 4-3. Guillen scored the tying
run when catcher Mike Redmond mishandled a called-strike three to
Vaughn.
Derrek Lee's RBI double in the fifth made it 3-0 and knocked out
Tampa starter Steve Trachsel, his shortest outing in his last eight
starts. Alex Gonzalez added an RBI single to make it 4-0.
Trachsel allowed 10 hits and four runs in 4 1/3 innings.
Floyd had a sacrifice fly in the first and Wilson added a RBI
single in the third to make it 2-0.
"We're always proud of a win," Wilson said. "It wasn't always
pretty, but we've lost some games that we played good. For us to
win, it can't be all bad. ... Nobody in here quits."
