GAME LOG
MIAMI (AP) -- Florida Marlins manager John Boles doesn't like
close games, even when his team wins.
Preston Wilson homered and drove in a career-high four runs, and
Cliff Floyd added a three-run shot as the Florida Marlins endured a
1 hour, 45-minute rain delay to beat the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 10-9
Sunday.

"I was hoping the game would be rained out and we would win
9-5," Boles said. "But our grounds crew is too good and we had to
come out and finish the game. We're 21-12 in one-run games. That's
a tribute to our bullpen."
The Marlins were leading 9-5 in the seventh inning, but Gerald
Williams' three-run homer off Brad Penny pulled the Devil Rays to
9-8. Two batters later, the rain came.
After the delay, the Devil Rays scored a run in the eighth when
pinch-hitter Steve Cox singled in Mike DiFelice. Antonio Alfonseca
got the final four outs for his major league-leading 28th save in
31 chances.
"I'm very happy the way I'm playing right now," Alfonseca
said. "I have 28 saves and that makes me happy for myself and the
team."
The Marlins broke a 4-4 tie in the fourth inning against Doug
Creek when Wilson doubled in Floyd.
Wilson made it 6-4 when he forced catcher DiFelice to drop the
ball for an error on an attempted steal of home.
In the fifth, Wilson, who was 3-for-5 with two runs scored, hit
a three-run homer off reliever Esteban Yan to extend the lead to
9-5.
"It was just a fastball out over the plate," Wilson said of
his 459-foot drive to center field. "Not too many go out in that
part of the stadium. I was fortunate to get enough of that one."
Floyd also scored three times as part of his 3-for-4 day.
"Last night I knew the way I was playing wasn't me," Floyd
said. "I was squeezing the bat too hard. Tonight, I used a lighter
bat from Dave Berg and just relaxed. I hit the ball hard and good
things happened."
Jesus Sanchez (5-7) allowed five hits while striking out three
and walking one in five innings for the Marlins. Two of the hits
were home runs to Fred McGriff and Greg Vaughn.
Ryan Rupe, called up by the Devil Rays from Triple-A Durham on
Saturday night, had a rough time in his first major league start
since May 2.
In 2 2/3 innings, Rupe allowed six hits, walked four, hit two
batters and issued a wild pitch while allowing four earned runs.
"It was a rough start coming back," Rupe said. "I couldn't
keep the ball down and threw a few pitches I shouldn't have. It
wasn't there for me."
Doug Creek (0-1) relieved Rupe in the third, allowing two runs -- one earned -- and two hits in 1 1/3 innings.
The Devil Rays tied it with two runs in the fourth. Vaughn led
off with his 14th home run to make it 4-3. McGriff then doubled,
advanced to third on Andy Fox's fielding error and scored on Vinny
Castilla's sacrifice fly.
Game notes
McGriff's first-inning homer, a two-run shot, was the 408th
of his career, passing Duke Snider for 30th place on the career
list. ... Wilson's homer traveled 459 feet, fifth-longest by a
Marlins player at home. ... The Marlins have a team-record 97 home
runs at the All-Star break. ... The rain delay was only Florida's
third at home this season. ... The Marlins' 37-24 record in
interleague play is the best in baseball.
