GAME LOG
BALTIMORE (AP) -- Jesus Sanchez pitched an eight-hitter in his
first complete game as the Florida Marlins beat Mike Mussina and
the Baltimore Orioles 7-0 Tuesday night to avert a three-game
sweep.
Preston Wilson and Kevin Millar homered for the Marlins in a
four-run eighth inning against Darren Holmes. Wilson drove in seven
runs in the series to boost his team-high total to 76.
Sanchez (6-7) struck out five and walked none. The left-hander
permitted only three runners past second base in his first complete
game in 58 major league starts.
It was his second straight win after six successive losses.
Mussina (6-9) allowed three runs and eight hits in seven
innings, but lost his second straight start since the All-Star
break.
Mussina's sub-.500 record belies his 3.82 ERA. He has been
victimized by a lack of offensive support -- the Orioles are
averaging 3.2 runs in his 21 starts and 5.6 runs in their other 71
games.
The Marlins got five hits in a three-run second inning,
including an RBI double by Millar and run-scoring singles by Alex
Gonzalez and Luis Castillo.
The Orioles didn't get a runner to second base until the sixth,
when rookie Luis Matos led off with a double. He moved to third on
a groundout before Sanchez struck out Mike Bordick and retired Will
Clark on a fly ball.
Albert Belle hit an opposite-field double to right to open the
seventh, but he too was stranded.
After Mussina left, the Marlins pulled away. Cliff Floyd led off
the eighth with a single and Wilson followed with his 21st homer.
Derrek Lee then singled and Millar hit a shot to left.
