GAME LOG
PHOENIX (AP) -- Another game, another milestone for Rickey
Henderson.
More importantly, another victory for the Seattle Mariners, who
had the foresight to give the 41-year-old a chance to extend his
career.
Henderson hit a tiebreaking, two-run single in the ninth inning
Tuesday night and the Seattle Mariners beat the Arizona
Diamondbacks 5-2.
It was Henderson's first hit in five at-bats, but the 2,876th of
his career, tying Mel Ott for 34th place all-time.
"It was a big game for us," said Henderson, now four hits
behind Frank Frisch for 33rd. "You know, we don't want to go into
Oakland beating second-place teams. We want to go in there with a
high note."
Henderson, who had an RBI triple to beat the Diamondbacks on
Sunday, put the Mariners ahead 4-2 when he singled with the bases
loaded against Vicente Padilla (2-1).
Seattle added another run when Byung-Hyun Kim walked John Olerud
with the bases loaded. Reliever Mike Morgan finally got the last
out of the ninth by getting Mike Cameron on a fly ball.
Arthur Rhodes (3-3) got the win and Kazuhiro Sasaki got his 22nd
save. Arizona lost for the sixth time in nine games.
"We obviously pitched well enough to win the game tonight, but
the story is we didn't do anything offensively to amount to much,"
Diamondbacks manager Buck Showalter said.
Seattle took a 2-1 lead into the eighth, thanks to Edgar
Martinez's first RBI since July 8.
Martinez, usually the Mariners' DH, made his second start this
season and ninth of his career in an NL park. Playing first base,
he doubled for his 88th RBI after Carlos Guillen scored on an error
by third baseman Matt Williams. Only Frank Thomas of the Chicago
White Sox has more RBIs (89).
"Every time you get a hit and an RBI it feels good, and right
now it was because we won the game," Martinez said. "It means a
lot more -- and it was a close game."
Mariners starter Freddy Garcia walked Damian Miller to lead off
the eighth, then gave up a single to Danny Bautista.
Rhodes came in to pitch to Tony Womack, who lined out to Charles
Gipson in shallow right field. In a close play, Miller reached for
the plate with his left leg as catcher Joe Oliver tagged him on the
back, and umpire Dana DeMuth ruled safe.
Garcia limited the Diamondbacks to five hits and two runs in
seven-plus innings, striking out three and walking two.
But all he got was his fourth straight no-decision since he went
five innings in a 19-7 rout over Toronto on April 16, and his third
since he returned from the disabled list July 7 after breaking his
right tibia.
"I tell you what," Seattle manager Lou Piniella said. "He's a
very accomplished pitcher for a young man."
Garcia retired the first 11 batters before Luis Gonzalez lined a
single with two outs in the fourth.
In the fifth, Steve Finley led off with a single, stole second,
reached third when Oliver's low throw rolled into center for an
error, and scored on Erubiel Durazo's sacrifice fly that cut the
score to 2-1.
Arizona's Brian Anderson allowed two unearned runs on seven hits
in seven innings, but was denied a victory for the fourth start
this month. His last win was a 6-2 decision over Houston on June
28.
"I'm not one to get caught up in personal stats," Anderson
said. "It's a starting pitcher's job to eat up innings and keep
his team in the game."
Padilla relieved Anderson in the eighth and allowed three runs
on four hits and two walks in 1 1/3 innings.
Game notes Garcia singled in the fifth and seventh innings, becoming
the third Mariners pitcher to hit safely in 18 interleague games.
Paul Abbott (two) was the only successful hitter on the staff until
John Halama singled Monday night. ... Williams' error in the third
snapped a streak of 65 errorless innings by the Diamondbacks, their
longest this season. ... Womack has five bunt singles in the last
nine games. ... The Mariners finished this year's interleague play
at 11-7. The Diamondbacks were 6-9.
