DENVER (AP) -- Adam Eaton was just looking for an opportunity
with the San Diego Padres.
The right-hander, acquired in an off-season trade for Andy Ashby,
made the most of that chance Friday night, winning for the first
time in nine starts as the San Diego Padres beat the slumping
Colorado Rockies 5-1.
"I doubt if I would have been this far with the Philadelphia
Phillies," said Eaton, who also went 3-for-3. "The direction they
were going in was they wanted to win right away. Maybe I'd be up by
now, but not with 10 starts."
Eaton (2-1), who beat Milwaukee on May 30 and had seven
no-decisions since, fanned three, walked four and gave up a run and
seven hits in 7 1/3 innings, his longest stint of the year.
"It's been a long time coming, I've been just battling out
there," said the 22-year-old Eaton, who has worked at least six
innings in seven of his last eight starts including his past four.
"I can't explain what happened. Everything was going my way."
Eaton also walked and became the first Padres pitcher in over
five years to steal a base.
"Adam did a heck of a job," San Diego manager Bruce Bochy
said. "He'd heard a lot about this place and pitched great.
"We've had trouble getting him that win."
Martin had a two-run single. Ryan Klesko, Damian Jackson and
Ruben Rivera added RBI hits.
Brian Bohanon (4-7), who has allowed 41 earned runs in 40 2/3
innings at Coors Field, gave up five runs in 4 2/3 innings and is
2-4 in eight starts since returning to the starting rotation.
Colorado lost for the 13th time in 15 games.
Eaton yielded a first-inning run on a two-out single by Jeffrey
Hammonds, a wild pitch and a single to left by Mike Lansing.
San Diego took advantage of Bohanon's wildness in the fourth
inning to take a 3-1 lead. Bohanon walked Klesko, gave up a bloop
single to Phil Nevin and walked Bret Boone before Martin singled
with one out.
"Something has to change for me," Bohanon said. "A couple of
mistakes and three runs are up on the board quickly."
Ben Davis forced Martin at second, but Jackson slapped a two-out
single to right to score Boone.
Eaton helped himself with a one-out single in the sixth, stole
second and scored when Ruben Rivera singled. Klesko doubled to
left, scoring Rivera to build a 5-1 lead.
"The kid had great stuff and seemed to get stronger as the game
went on," Colorado manager Buddy Bell said. "He was up around 95,
96 mph in the eighth inning. That's not too bad."
Game notes
With RHPs Carlton Loewer and Brian Boehringer scheduled for
season-ending shoulder surgery Tuesday, seven Padres will have
had surgery since opening day. ... San Diego purchased the contract
of LHP Dave Mauer from Triple-A Las Vegas, placed RHP Steve
Montgomery on the 15-day DL and transferred RHP Brian Boehringer
from the 15-day to the 60-day DL. ... Colorado SS Neifi Perez
batted second for the third time this year. Lansing has been in
that spot for 77 games. Lansing got his second RBI in his last 17
games. ... Scott Sanders was the last Padres pitcher to steal a
base on June 14, 1995.
