PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Damon Buford drove in three runs, including
a tiebreaking triple in the eighth inning, to lead the Chicago Cubs
to their 10th victory in 13 games, 8-7 over the Philadelphia Phillies
on Tuesday night.
The Cubs squandered a 6-2 lead before rallying in the eighth.
Sammy Sosa opened the inning with a walk off Chris Brock (5-5).
After Gary Matthews Jr. hit into a forceout, Buford tripled into
the left-center field gap to give the Cubs the lead. One out later,
Joe Girardi tripled to make it 8-6.
Buford went 2-for-4 and also had a two-run double in Chicago's
three-run first. The Cubs have won four straight.
Tim Worrell (1-1) pitched 1 2/3 innings, working out of a
bases-loaded jam in the eighth, to pick up the win. Rick Aguilera
pitched the ninth for his 22nd save in 29 opportunities. He allowed
a leadoff homer to Ron Gant.
Chicago took a 3-0 lead in the first off Randy Wolf. Mark Grace
opened the scoring with a RBI double and Buford added a two-run
double.
Mark Grace extended the lead to 4-0 in the third with his eighth
homer of the season.
After Philadelphia closed to 4-2 behind RBI singles by Tom
Prince and Wolf in the fourth, Ricky Gutierrez doubled in two in
the fifth to make it 6-2.
The Phillies rallied in the fifth on Scott Rolen's RBI double
and Gant's sacrifice fly. Mickey Morandini's RBI double in the
sixth made it 6-5 off starter Jon Lieber.
Lieber, who had won his last four decisions, allowed five runs
and 11 hits in six innings. He failed to reach the seventh inning
for the first time in 13 starts.
Philadelphia tied the game at 6 on pinch-hitter Rico Brogna's
RBI single off Worrell.
Wolf allowed six runs, five hits and four walks in five innings.
Three walks were turned into runs.
Game notes
Phillies RHP Curt Schilling, who has sparked trade rumors,
began to clean out his locker Tuesday. GM Ed Wade wouldn't comment
on any possibilities of trading the staff's ace. ... Eric Young
stole his 30th base of the season in the first inning. Brian McRae
was the last Cub to steal 30 bases when he swiped 37 in 1996. ...
Aguilera earned his 311th career save, tying him with Tom Henke for
eighth place on the career list. ... Phillies leadoff hitter Doug
Glanville hasn't walked in his last 117 plate appearances. He has
19 walks for the season. ... The Cubs shuffled their pitching
rotation for Thursday, inserting Scott Downs (4-3, 5.40 ERA) in
place of Kerry Wood. Wood will start Saturday against San
Francisco. ... Paul Byrd pitched two perfect innings in his first
relief appearance of the season for the Phillies.
