MIAMI (AP) -- The Los Angeles Dodgers' high-priced players
weren't producing against the frugal Florida Marlins, so manager
Davey Johnson turned to his bench.
Four reserves and emergency starter Ismael Valdes helped Los
Angeles avert a three-game sweep by beating Florida 10-4 Wednesday
night.
The Dodgers, who lost eight of their previous 10 games, blew a
3-1 lead before erupting with seven runs in the eighth. Dave Hansen
hit a tiebreaking two-out, two-run triple, and pinch-hitter Adrian
Beltre capped the outburst with a three-run homer.
"I wanted to put some energy in the lineup," Johnson said.
"And I like what I saw."
Hansen started for only the 11th time this year. Reserves Tom
Goodwin, Jim Leyritz and F.P. Santangelo also started for Johnson.
"He threw a lot of scrappers out there," said Santangelo, who
had three of the Dodgers' 11 hits and scored three times.
"Our main objective was to go out and play our hearts out,"
Hansen said. "Sometimes it's good to have a change of pace. The
guys played with a lot of spunk."
Valdes pitched well in place of Chan Ho Park, who came down with
flu-like symptoms and was scratched from his scheduled start.
Valdes, who started despite pitching one inning in relief Tuesday,
went five innings and left with a 3-1 lead.
"I did everything I could do to win this ballgame," Valdes
said.
The Dodgers trailed 4-3 when Goodwin led off the eighth with an
infield single against Dan Miceli (5-3). Santangelo was hit by a
pitch and Gary Sheffield's single loaded the bases.
First baseman Kevin Millar bobbled a potential double-play
grounder by Todd Hundley and got only one out as the tying run
scored. Hansen followed with a two-out triple into the right-field
corner, and he scored on Chad Kreuter's single. Alex Cora greeted
Vic Darensbourg with a single, and Beltre hit his 12th home run.
"It was one of those games," Millar said. "The Dodgers came
up with the big hits. Sometimes you've got to tip your hat to the
other team."
Especially when that team has a $93 million payroll, compared
with $12.5 million for the Marlins' active roster. Los Angeles has
one more win than Florida this season.
Terry Adams (5-4) earned the victory despite giving up an
unearned run that put Florida ahead in the seventh. He retired the
first two batters before loading the bases, and when a fastball to
Preston Wilson sailed inside and deflected off catcher Kreuter's
glove, Luis Castillo scored on the passed ball.
Millar hit a two-run homer, his 12th, in the sixth. A.J. Burnett
allowed four hits and three runs in seven innings, but remained
winless since July 20.
Each team was guilty of sloppy defense and had three players
thrown out on the bases.
Marlins manager John Boles was ejected by second base umpire
Mark Hirschbeck for arguing a call that ended the sixth inning.
With one out and Mark Smith at first, Dave Berg hit a deep fly that
right fielder Shawn Green caught. Smith, who rounded second,
returned to first but was called out for failing to touch second
again on his way back.
Boles argued at length, then received a standing ovation from
the crowd of 11,855 when he finally walked off the field.
"I was thinking the call was wrong," Boles said after watching
a TV replay. "On further review, the umpire was right. I commend
him for making a tough call, and I eat a little humble pie."
The Dodgers broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth. Santangelo hit a
broken-bat blooper that landed on the foul line for an RBI double,
and later came home on Sheffield's grounder to make the score 3-1.
Berg singled home the Marlins' first run in the second. Green
tied the score with a sacrifice fly in the fourth.
Ramon Castro missed becoming the first Marlins catcher to homer
this year by a foot, hitting a drive off the top of the
26½-foot-high scoreboard in the fifth. Left fielder Sheffield
caught the ball barehanded on the carom and threw out Castro trying
to stretch the hit into a double.
Notes: Dodgers reliever Antonio Osuna was unavailable because of a
stiff shoulder. His status is day-to-day. ... Beltre's pinch-hit
homer was the seventh by the Dodgers this season and the second in
as many nights. ... Top Marlins pitching prospect Josh Beckett, who
is with Class A Kane County, was placed on the 15-day disabled list
with tendinitis in his right biceps. ... Marlins left fielder Cliff
Floyd, sidelined since undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery July
29, hopes to rejoin the lineup by August 25. ... Henry Rodriguez
went 0-for-2 against Valdes and is 2-for-21 lifetime against the
right-hander. ... Burnett faced the Dodgers for the first time
since beating them in his major league debut a year ago -- Aug. 17,
1999.
