MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Unable to do much against Milwaukee starter
John Snyder, San Diego took it out on the Brewers' bullpen.
Ryan Klesko's run-scoring single in the eighth inning lifted the
San Diego Padres to a 2-1 victory over Milwaukee on Sunday.
After Snyder held San Diego to just three hits in seven
scoreless innings, the Padres rallied against relievers David
Weathers (3-5) and Valerio De Los Santos in the eighth.
"To be shut out for seven innings and come back to win it in
the eighth, that's nice," San Diego manager Bruce Bochy said. "We
were just trying to get something going."
Pinch-hitter John Mabry walked with one out and advanced to
second on Eric Owens' single. Desi Relaford followed with an RBI
single to left to tie the game at 1.
"I was just lucky I got it," Relaford said. "I put a good
swing on it and it just fell in. It gave Klesko a chance to come up
to the plate and drive in the big run."
De Los Santos relieved Weathers and gave up Klesko's single to
left, scoring Owens. After an intentional walk to Phil Nevin, Mike
Darr bounced into an inning-ending double play.
"We felt confident Weathers could do it and our bullpen could
hold them," Milwaukee manager Davey Lopes said.
Woody Williams (8-5) gave up one run and six hits in seven
innings. He struck out four.
"Sometimes what gets lost is how well he pitches," Bochy said.
"One run in seven innings isn't bad. We had to do something to get
him the win."
To preserve it, Bochy used Trevor Hoffman in the ninth. He
pitched a hitless inning for his 35th save in 42 tries.
Milwaukee wasted a fine performance by Snyder, who has not won
since June 22. Snyder retired the first 10 batters he faced and did
not allow a hit until Nevin's single in the fourth.
Milwaukee took a 1-0 lead in the first. With two outs, Geoff
Jenkins singled and scored on Richie Sexson's double to
right-center.
Game notes With the save, Hoffman picked up his 263rd career save out
of 301 chances, tops on the career list of save percentage list at
.874. ... Williams is 13-5 since Sept. 3, 1999. ... Snyder's 1-2-3
first inning was rare. Entering the game, he posted a 10.06 ERA in
the first inning of his 17 starts this season. ... San Diego is
15-6 on Sundays. The only other day the Padres have a winning
record is Thursdays (7-5). Nevin has reached base safely via a hit
or walk 47 consecutive games beginning July 3. He is six games shy
of tying Shawn Green's major league-best 53-game streak earlier
this season.
