LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Tom Goodwin finally made a contribution for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Goodwin, who has struggled since coming to Los Angeles at the
trade deadline, hit a two-out RBI single in the 10th inning that
lifted the Dodgers to a 1-0 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies
on Saturday night.
Goodwin, acquired from Colorado for Todd Hollandsworth and a
pair of minor leaguers, drove in only five runs, stole four bases
and hit .235 while striking out 22 times in 98 at-bats coming into
Saturday.
"I'm not in it for high moments. I'm not trying to come over here and be some savior. I'm just trying to help the team win any way I can," Goodwin said.
"Just because you don't get hits all the time, you might go out
and play great defense to help the team win. But it's not going to
be read about in the papers or talked about on TV. So I don't get
caught up in that. I just go out and play."
The Dodgers' 10th victory in 13 games put them eight games over
.500, equaling a season best, and gave them five consecutive home
victories for the first time this season.
Jeff Branson doubled with one out in the 10th against Vicente
Padilla (3-4). Dave Hansen advanced Branson with a grounder to
first base and Goodwin drove Padilla's next pitch to center.
Branson's key hit quickly got the fans back on his side -- two
innings after he was booed by the crowd of 37,244 for popping up an
attempted sacrifice bunt.
"Things like that happen. But Branny being the kind of
professional he is, he's not going to get down or pout," Goodwin
said.
Matt Herges (9-3) earned the victory with a perfect 10th. The
30-year-old rookie right-hander has recorded all of his victories
in relief and all of his losses as a starter.
"I don't really believe in luck, but I'm pretty fortunate. I
know that," Herges said. "I don't know why we score runs when I'm
pitching, but it's pretty nice."
Kevin Brown matched zeros with Bruce Chen through the first
seven innings before being replaced by Antonio Osuna. The Dodgers
right-hander has allowed fewer than two earned runs in 12 of his 28
starts, but is only 5-1 in those games.
Chen tied a career high with eight strikeouts in 8 2/3 innings
and walked one. The 23-year-old left-hander, who joined
Philadelphia on July 12 in a trade that sent Andy Ashby to Atlanta,
has allowed only one run over 17 1/3 innings in his last two starts
-- after surrendering nine earned runs in 13 innings during his
previous two outings.
"He's been very impressive since he's been here, and he's been
real tough these last two starts," Phillies pitching coach Galen
Cisco said.
"He's gotten his breaking ball over a little bit better and
he's changed speeds well with his curveball. Tonight he had a good
fastball, good location and stayed ahead of the hitters for the
most part. And if he keeps improving, he's going to be a good
pitcher for a long time."
Chen allowed just two singles and retired 13 consecutive batters
before Todd Hundley led off the eighth with a single.
Brown, trying to win three consecutive starts for the first time
since August 1999, allowed four hits and walked none while lowering
his ERA to 2.62 -- second in the NL to Randy Johnson's 2.31.
"Everybody knows that Brown's a good pitcher and he likes to
throw the ball at the corners," said Rob Ducey, who struck out all three times he faced him. "He never leaves anything over the plate and he's got pretty good stuff."
The Phillies got only one runner as far as third base against
Brown, when Mike Lieberthal led off the second with a double and
advanced on Travis Lee's grounder to first. But Ducey and Marlon
Anderson struck out.
Seven of Brown's nine strikeouts came in a span of 10 batters -- including Ducey twice on called third strikes. The only putout recorded by a Dodgers outfielder during the first 4 2/3 innings was
a fly ball by Scott Rolen that right fielder Shawn Green caught on
the warning track.
Game notes
Politte, who was recalled again from
Triple-A Scranton on Friday, is scheduled to make his sixth start
of the season when the Phillies begin a 14-game homestand with a
doubleheader against Montreal on Sept. 12. ... Philadelphia's Bobby Abreu stole his 20th base in the eighth inning, joining Hall of
Famer Mike Schmidt as the only players in Phillies history to
record at least 20 steals and 20 home runs in a season twice. ...
Phillies manager Terry Francona has been wearing glasses for the
past week to correct a stigmatism. ... Dodgers reliever Mike Fetters, who hurt his back while making a throw to first base on
Tomas Perez's bunt on Friday night, was held out of Saturday night's game and expected to sit out Sunday's as well.
