SAN DIEGO (AP) -- The Pittsburgh Pirates can thank Matt Clement
for their rare two-game winning streak.
Clement's wildness greatly aided the Pirates in scoring their first four runs en route to a 6-3 victory over the San Diego Padres on Saturday night.
Abraham Nunez paced Pittsburgh with three RBI, including a
run-scoring infield single in the third and a two-run single that
capped a three-run seventh.
"From the beginning, he was really wild," said Abraham, whose
pinch-hit infield single gave the Pirates a 3-2, 10-inning win
Friday night. "It helps when he's so wild because you don't have
to do as much with the bats."
Clement (12-13) had trouble with his command throughout as
allowed three runs, four hits, and a career-high eight walks -- four
leading off innings. He also threw two wild pitches and hit a
batter in six-plus innings.
"I stunk tonight," Clement said. "I just didn't do my job. I
had a tough time getting going early in the game."
The Pirates, with the worst record in the majors, won two
straight games for the first time since beating San Diego on July
28-29.
"It's nice to shake hands two games in a row," joked
Pittsburgh manager Gene Lamont.
Todd Ritchie (7-7) allowed three runs and seven hits over six
innings. Ritchie struck out four and walked one.
Scott Sauerbeck pitched the ninth for his first save of the
season.
"Any time you win when you've had a season like we've had, it's
good," Ritchie said. "It would be nice if we could build on this
and put together a long win streak."
Pittsburgh broke a 3-3 tie in the seventh. Clement was pulled
after a leadoff walk to Brian Giles. Kevin Walker gave up a one-out
double to Wayne Morris and an intentional walk to load the bases.
Keith Osik then singled in one run off Carlos Almanzar and Nunez
followed with his two-run single.
"We blew it," Padres manager Bruce Bochy said. "It's another
rough game. That's two in a row we haven't played well."
The Pirates used Adrian's Brown leadoff single in the first and
two walks to score a run on Morris' groundout.
Clement walked Giles leading off the third and Vander Wal
singled him to third. Giles scored on Clement's wild pitch. After a
walk and a hit batter loaded the bases, Nunez's infield single
scored another run.
The Padres closed the gap to 3-2 in the fifth on George
Williams' two-run homer, his first of the season. Williams made
only his second start since being called up from the minors on Aug.
13.
San Diego tied the score at 3 in the sixth after loading the
bases with no outs. Phil Nevin's groundout scored one run, but
Ritchie worked out of the jam by retiring John Mabry on a fly ball
and Mike Darr on a lineout.
Game notes
Clement eight walks upped his total to 108, tops in the
majors. Clement also moved past Cincinnati's Scott Williamson for
the major league lead with 21 wild pitches and is within one of the
majors' lead with his 14th hit batsman. ... Padres manager Bruce
Bochy was ejected for arguing about an inning-ending double play
call in the fourth. With Ryan Klesko on first, Nevin hit a line
drive at Ritchie's right foot. The ball caromed off his foot to
first baseman Alex Hernandez, who stepped on first to retire Nevin
with Klesko moving to second. After Pirates manager Gene Lamont
argued, the umpires ruled that the ball never hit the ground, but
directly struck Ritchie's foot. ... Pittsburgh 3B Enrique Wilson
(sprained ankle), INF Mike Benjamin (back pain) and 1B Kevin Young
(groin strain) probably won't play until Monday at the earliest.
... San Diego's Damian Jackson extended his career-high hitting
streak to 11 games with a first-inning single.
