CHICAGO (AP) _ Bobby Higginson homered to cap a six-run third
inning as the Detroit Tigers ended a six-game losing streak Tuesday
night, beating the Chicago White Sox 10-3. Despite the loss, Chicago's magic number for clinching the AL
Central was reduced to 13 when the Boston Red Sox beat second-place
Cleveland 8-6 at Jacobs Field. Magglio Ordonez homered twice for the White Sox and drove in
three runs, giving him career highs with 31 homers and 118 RBIs. Dave Mlicki (5-11) gave up three runs and three hits in five
innings, including Ordonez's two-run shot in the first and solo
blast in the fifth. The White Sox managed just four hits as Willie
Blair pitched three innings of one-hit ball and Todd Jones
finished. Detroit jumped on rookie Kip Wells (5-8) for seven hits and six
runs in just two-plus innings. Deivi Cruz had an RBI double, Juan Encarnacion a run-scoring
single and Billy McMillon an RBI single in a three-run second off
Wells, making his second start since returning from the minors. Dean Palmer, Tony Clark and Cruz singled to finish Wells in the
third. Brad Ausmus had an RBI single off reliever Sean Lowe, who
hit Damion Easley to load the bases and gave up a sacrifice fly to
McMillon before Higginson drove a three-run shot to right, his 26th
homer of the season. Hal Morris hit his first homer for Detroit in the ninth off Matt
Ginter. Notes: Ordonez has six career multihomer games, including four
this season. His two homers allowed the White Sox to tie the club
record of 198 set in 1998 .... The victory was just the second for
Detroit in eight games against the White Sox this season and first
in five games at Comiskey Park, where the teams got into an ugly
brawl in April. ... Another small crowd for a first-place team,
just 15,296. ... Juan Gonzalez was 0-for-5 with three strikeouts
and is 1-for-17 in his last four games. ... Wells entered the game
2-0 with a 1.54 ERA against the Tigers in 11 2-3 innings.
