GAME LOG
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- A win is a win, especially when you're a 30-year-old rookie.
"I was thinking we were going to have a walk-off, but with two
outs in the 10th, I wasn't so sure," Los Angeles reliever Matt
Herges said Friday night after the Dodgers beat Colorado 4-3 in 10
innings.
Herges pitched just one inning, a perfect 10th, to run his
record to 10-0 in relief. He is 0-3 as a starter.
"You can call me a vulture, but I'll take it," he said of his
latest victory. "No matter what's going on in the standings, the
postseason, it's great to win a game like that."
Mark Grudzielanek, who had grounded out his previous four
at-bats, hit a two-out solo homer in the 10th to give the Dodgers
the victory.
"I was tired of running to first and back to the dugout," he
said with a smile.
He drove a 2-1 pitch from Mike DeJean (4-4) into the left-field
pavilion for his seventh homer.
"In that spot, I was just trying to work the count in my favor
to get a fastball," he said. "That's what I did and I hit it
square."
Ending an 0-for-11 slump, the Rockies' Todd Helton hit a two-run
homer -- the 100th of his career -- in the sixth off Darren Dreifort.
Helton went 1-for-5, lowering his major league-leading average to
.374.
With the Dodgers down 3-1, Alex Cora drew them even with a
two-run double in the seventh, his second run-scoring double of the
game.
Colorado's Kevin Jarvis allowed two-out walks to Todd Hundley
and Adrian Beltre before Cora doubled down the right-field line to
tie it.
Rockies starter Pedro Astacio held the Dodgers hitless through
the first three innings, allowing just one baserunner on a walk
before he went off with a strained oblique muscle in his left side.
He was listed as day-to-day.
"In the third inning, he didn't have the same velocity,"
Colorado manager Buddy Bell said. "When he came off the field, he
said he had a little problem with his side."
Bell thinks it's difficult to know when Astacio might pitch
again.
"Those things last a little longer than you want them to. It's
unfortunate, too, because he looked to me like his stuff was as
good as he's had in awhile."
The Rockies took a quick lead when Neifi Perez hit a solo homer,
his ninth, off Dreifort with one out in the opening inning. Perez
drove a 2-2 pitch over the right-field wall.
The Dodgers tied it in the fifth on Cora's RBI double off
Jarvis. Beltre walked and scored from first on the double, but Cora
was thrown out at third by first baseman Helton, who cut off the
relay throw and nailed Cora.
"I gave them three, two-out walks and they all scored," Jarvis
said. "That's a cardinal sin in pitching and something you try to
avoid."
After Jeff Cirillo led off the sixth with a double for Colorado,
Helton drove a 3-1 pitch from Dreifort into the left-field seats.
Dreifort, the winner in the Dodgers' 12-1 victory over Astacio
and the Rockies on Sunday, gave up three runs on five hits in six
innings in the rematch. He struck out seven and walked three.
Game notes The Dodgers and Mandalay Sports Entertainment announced the
signing of a player development contract that will make the
Triple-A Las Vegas Stars the Dodgers' top minor league affiliate
beginning next season. Los Angeles earlier announced it would end
its agreement with Triple-A Albuquerque this year. ... Dave Garcia,
senior adviser to Rockies manager Buddy Bell, celebrated his 80th
birthday on Friday. The only two men to remain involved in an
on-field capacity at older ages were the Philadelphia Athletics
manager, Connie Mack, who retired at 88; and former Angels
conditioning coach Jimmie Reese, who was still coaching when he
died at 92. ... Los Angeles catcher Jim Leyritz will leave the club
Tuesday to return home to Florida for surgery on a torn rotator
cuff in his right shoulder.
