PHILADELPHIA (AP) _ Kevin Jordan made the most of his relief
appearance at third base on Friday night. Filling in for Scott Rolen, who was forced to leave because of
back stiffness, Jordan hit a two-run double Friday night and the
Philadelphia Phillies beat the Florida Marlins 7-4. "It was a lift for KJ (Jordan) but for all of us too," said
Phillies manager Terry Francona. "It gave everyone a boost." Rolen had trouble getting his back loose before the game and
Francona noticed while Rolen ran to first on a flyout in the first
inning that something wasn't right. "You can just see the body language," Francona said. "For him
to come out in the third inning, you know he's not doing too
good." Winner Robert Person (9-5) struck out 10, matching a season
high, in seven-plus innings. He posted his fourth win in his last
five decisions. "Every pitcher wants to end with an exclamation point," said
Person. "I really want to finish strong and head into next year." Pat Burrell had two hits, including a homer, and two scored
twice for the Phillies. Travis Lee added a two-run single. Mark Kotsay and Derrek Lee homered for the Marlins. The game was tied at 2 in the fifth when A.J. Burnett (2-6)
retired the first two batters. Doug Glanville then tripled and Lee
walked before Jordan hit a go-ahead double, with Rob Ducey adding
an RBI single. Rolen, who left the game in the third inning with a stiff back,
is day-to-day but Francona said he was not planning to use him on
Saturday. "If I can't produce I shouldn't be out there," Rolen said. "I
think I could have stayed in the game but should I play and not do
much?" Person settled down after allowing singles to the first two
batters of the game, both of whom scored. Cliff Floyd had an RBI
grounder and Mike Lowell had a sacrifice fly. "After he gave up those first two he was pretty good,"
Francona said. Person left after walking the leadoff batter in the eighth, but
relievers Ed Vosberg and Vicente Padilla retired the side. Lee hit
a leadoff homer in the ninth. Burnett remained winless since Aug. 22. He went six innings and
gave up five runs on six hits and six walks. "Burnett had some difficulty with his command," said Marlins
manager John Boles. "His stuff was there but he gave up six walks
and walks generally lead to trouble." Burrell accounted for the first two Phillies runs. He doubled
and scored in the second on a groundout by Tom Prince, and hit his
16th homer to start the fifth. "I feel a lot more comfortable at the plate, better than I have
all year" said Burrell, who leads all National League rookies in
extra base hits (40) and RBIs (68). Kotsay hit a solo homer in the sixth. He is 7-for-12 (.583)
during the first four games of the Marlins' trip. Notes: Phillies RHP Kent Bottenfield pitched on the side Friday
night and had no problems with his injured ankle. Bottenfield, who
missed his scheduled start on Tuesday, will go back into the
rotation on Monday. ... Florida's Preston Wilson pinch-hit in the
seventh and struck out for the 175th time, most in the majors. ...
Luis Castillo's bunt single in the ninth was his 55th infield hit,
tops in the majors.
