GAME LOG
DENVER (AP) -- Matt Clement was not going to let a leg cramp ruin
his night.
The San Diego Padres used a strong effort from Clement to send
the Colorado Rockies to their fourth straight loss, 7-2 Tuesday
night.
"I definitely wanted to go on," Clement said after cramping up
in the fifth inning. "I didn't think that what I was doing
decreased at all."
Clement (13-15) gave up four hits and two runs in 5 2/3 innings
to win for the first time since Aug. 20 at Chicago. He matched a
season-high with eight strikeouts.
"At the end of the fifth inning, the top of my calf started to
cramp when I pushed off," Clement said. "It wasn't killing me,
but it was something different, and you don't want anything
different on the mound."
Ben Davis, Ruben Rivera and Wiki Gonzalez hit home runs. Rivera
and Davis hit solo shots in the second inning to give San Diego a
2-0 lead. Rivera's one-out shot ended a string of 72 2/3 innings
without a home run by the Padres.
Brian Bohanon (10-10), who had given up only 12 runs in his last
53 innings, gave up five runs and seven hits in six-plus innings.
He hit his second home run of the season as the Rockies were
eliminated from the NL West Division race with the loss.
"Bo couldn't get to his breaking ball," Colorado manager Buddy
Bell said. "When Bo doesn't have a breaking ball, he doesn't have
a chance."
San Diego took a 4-1 lead in the fourth inning on two-out RBI
hits by Davis and Greg LaRocca. Bohanon got a double play ground
ball from Kory Darr after a single by Ed Sprague and walk to
Rivera, but Davis drilled a single to center and LaRocca followed
with a double to center.
Bohanon hit a solo home run to left with one out in the fifth to
get Colorado within 4-2. The Rockies got their first run on an RBI
single by Brent Mayne.
Gonzalez homered in the seventh and John Mabry had a pinch-hit
RBI double in the eighth to increase the Padres lead to 6-2.
"I had problems with location," said Bohanon, who shut the
Padres out on nine hits six days earlier.
Game notes San Diego hadn't hit a home run since Ryan Klesko's one-out
homer on Sept. 9 in the third inning at San Francisco. ... 3B Phil
Nevin missed his 11th straight game. Nevin has been out since Sept.
9 with a strained rib cage muscle. ... With the three walks,
Clement is four walks shy of tying Steve Arlin's franchise record
of 122 set in 1972. ... Bohanon's home run was the third of his
career. His nine RBIS is a single-season franchise high for a
Colorado pitcher. ... Todd Helton drew his 21st intentional walk of
the year. ... Rookie Juan Pierre has a 12-game hitting streak.
