GAME LOG
DETROIT (AP) _ Paul Konerko drove in a career-high five runs and
Ray Durham hit a grand slam to lead the Chicago White Sox to a 13-6
rain-delayed win over the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday night. The White Sox reduced their magic number for winning the AL
Central title to six over Cleveland. The game was delayed twice: for 1 hour, 22 minutes, before it
started and 1 hour, 29 minutes, in the first inning. It didn't
finish until 12:56 a.m. Thursday. Konerko hit a three-run double in a six-run third and a two-run
homer in the ninth to finish the rout. Bobby Higginson's solo homer in the third and a two-run shot by
Dean Palmer in the seventh got the Tigers within 7-5. But Durham hit his third career grand slam off Matt Anderson to
put the game out of reach in the eighth. Jon Garland (4-7), who lost his last three starts, allowed three
runs and six hits in six innings. Garland, vying for a spot in the
postseason rotation, won for only the second time in his last seven
decisions. Brian Moehler (12-9) lost his second straight decision after
winning his previous six. He gave up seven runs and seven hits in 2
1-3 innings. Detroit led 2-1 when Charles Johnson led off the third with his
29th homer. A hit and a walk set up an RBI single from Magglio
Ordonez, and after Carlos Lee's single loaded the bases, Konerko
cleared them with a drive up the right field gap that finished
Moehler. Herbert Perry's single off Willie Blair made it 7-2. In a downpour that began as the Tigers took the field, Durham
led off the first with a triple to the left-center gap. He scored
when Frank Thomas' catchable fly ball fell between right fielder
Rich Becker and center fielder Juan Encarnacion for a single. The Tigers went ahead in the second on an RBI groundout from
Damion Easley and a bases-loaded walk to Becker. Notes: Tigers closer Todd Jones spent part of the first-inning
delay tossing packets of sunflower seeds and baseballs to fans
behind the Detroit dugout. He also handed a bat to a young boy and
finished the gift-giving by throwing his cap into the stands. ...
The White Sox won the season series from Detroit, 9-3. ... There
were 28,422 tickets sold but only a few hundred fans in the stands
when the game ended.
