PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- The struggling Pittsburgh Pirates found
themselves in the right place this week.
The Pirates, who came into Veterans Stadium with an eight-game
losing streak, completed a three-game sweep over the Philadelphia
Phillies with a 7-6 win in 10 innings Wednesday night.
"Before we got here we had a tough stretch and needed some
wins," said Emil Brown, who hit a leadoff homer in the 10th to put
the Pirates ahead 5-4. "The Phillies just happened to be the
victims."
Adam Hyzdu added his first career homer, a two-run shot, in the
Pirates 10th.
"As it turns out it was a big hit," Hyzdu said. "Just shows
that you need to take advantage of every at-bat."
The Pirates finished off their first three-game sweep of the
Phillies since 1992.
Brown hit his third homer of the season on Chris Brock's first
pitch. Pat Meares followed with a single off Brock (7-8) before
Hyzdu homered.
"Brock tried to get ahead with a first-pitch fastball,"
Phillies manager Terry Francona said of Brown's homer. "Then boom,
before he could settle in, we were down."
Rich Loiselle (2-3) pitched two shutout innings to get the win.
The Phillies scored two runs in the 10th on a passed ball and
RBI single by Pat Burrell off Mike Williams to close within 7-6.
Philadelphia had the tying run on third base, but Williams got
Marlon Anderson to hit into a double play to earn his 22nd save.
"I'm glad we got three in that last inning," Pirates manager
Gene Lamont said.
The Phillies it at 4 in the seventh on Jimmy Rollins' RBI
groundout.
Pittsburgh took a 4-3 lead in the top of the seventh when Brown
hit into a double play with the bases loaded.
Robert Person went six-plus innings, giving up four runs, seven
hits and six walks while striking out five. Pirates starter Kris
Benson, who has won only once in 12 starts since the All-Star
break, gave up four runs and four hits in seven innings.
"Person walked people at inopportune times," Francona said.
"He battled with his fastball, he couldn't keep it down."
The Phillies took a 3-2 lead in the sixth when Scott Rolen hit
his 25th homer of the season, a two-run shot to left with two outs.
Rolen, who was 3-for-4, had an RBI double in the first.
Pittsburgh took a 1-0 lead in the first on doubles by Adrian
Brown and Warren Morris. The Pirates went ahead 2-1 in the third
when Adrian Brown walked, moved to second on a groundout, stole
third and scored on Jason Kendall's sacrifice fly.
Game notes
Adrian Brown has a 10-game hitting streak. He is 60-for-170
(.353) with 40 runs scored in 40 games since coming off the
disabled list. ... Person has had nine no-decisions in his last 16
starts. ... The Pirates have had their last four road series end in
sweeps, beating the San Diego Padres and the Los Angeles Dodgers
while getting swept by the Houston Astros.
