OK, so we've known for about a week that Cal Ripken will be retiring at the end of the season, but now it's time for the Ripken Farewell Tour to officially start, well, touring.
• May 30, 1982: The Streak begins against the Blue Jays at Memorial Stadium. Ripken bats eighth and starts at third base -- Lenn Sakata is the starting shortstop -- behind starter Jim Palmer. Jim Gott is the starter for the Blue Jays. • Sept. 14, 1987: Consecutive innings played streak ('82-'87, 8,243 straight spanning 904 games) ends in Toronto when Ron Washington replaces Ripken at shortstop in an 18-3 Blue Jays victory. • July 9, 1991: Is named All-Star Game MVP at SkyDome, hitting a three-run homer off former teammate Dennis Martinez and adding a single off Tom Glavine in 4-2 Al victory win. In the home run derby the previous day, his 12 home runs in 22 swings to led AL to 20-7 win. • July 15, 1996: Ripken's first start at third base since June 30, 1992, ending a streak of 2,216 consecutive games at short. Manny Alexander starts at short against Toronto. • May 9, 2000: Makes his first-ever appearanes as DH, going 1-for-4 with 2 RBI.
• July 6, 1983: Plays in his first All-Star game at Chicago's old Comiskey Park. Is a reserve, but plays four innings at shortstop and walks in his only plate appearance. • October, 1983: Hits .400 (6-for-15) in four games of ALCS against the White Sox. • Aug. 9, 1996: Collects 2,500th career hit at Comiskey, a single off of Bill Simas. • July 20, 1997: One of the earliest exits of his career comes against the White Sox, when he's ejected in the second inning for arguing a third strike call.
• June 13, 1999: Sets his career high for hits in a game with six in a game at Turner Field. Scores a career-high five runs in the same game. Both are team records. His final line from the 22-1 victory: 6-for-6, 2 home runs, double and 13 total bases. • July 11, 2000: Elected to start in his 16th All-Star Game, but is unable to attend the game at Turner Field after injuring his back and going on the DL (Cleveland's Travis Fryman starts in his place).
• Aug. 8, 1999: Has pinch-hit single in Game 2 of a doubleheader at Pro Player Stadium in Florida. It's only Ripken's fifth career pinch hit and his first since Aug. 30, 1991, when he batted for Eddie Murray.
• Aug. 10, 1985: Streak Close Call: In game 444 at Baltimore, Ripken sprains his left ankle at shortstop during a pickoff play in the third inning against the Rangers. He stays in the game and post-game X-rays are negative. He skips the team's exhibition against the U.S. Naval Acadmey the next night, but plays the following night against Toronto.
• July, 1989: Makes Orioles-record sixth consecutive All-Star Game start in the Midsummer Classic at Anaheim (breaking Brooks Robinson's record of five). Goes 1-for-3 with a double off Montreal's Tim Burke. • Sept. 6, 1995: The night everyone remembers. Ripken breaks Lou Gehrig's consecutive games played streak against the Angels at Camden Yards. In the record-tying and record-breaking games, Ripken goes a combined 5-for-9 and hits a home run in each game.
• Aug. 10, 1981: Makes his major-league debut against the Royals, entering the game as a pinch runner and scoring a run. • April 5, 1982: Hits his first major league homer against the Royals on Opening Day. • July 28, 1990: Ripken makes an error in Kansas City, ending his 95-game errorless streak (then a major league record; still stands as AL record). Ripken, who had made an error in the third game of the season, had gone 3 1/2 months and 431 chances between miscues. • June 14, 1996: Breaks Sachio Kinugasa's world record of 2,215 consecutive games played against Royals at Kauffman Stadium. Kinugasa was at the games when Ripken ties and breaks his record.
• July 13, 1999: Matches Rod Carew's record with his 15th consecutive All-Star Game selection. Goes 1-for-1 with a run, RBI and HBP at Fenway. • Friendly Fenway: Fenway is one of only two current AL parks where Ripken has a better than .300 average (.303; other is the Metrodome, where he's hit .321).
• Sept. 2, 1999: Becomes 29th major leaguer to hit 400 homers when he connects off Tampa Bay's Rolando Arrojo in his second game back from the disabled list. Milestone homer comes with two outs in the third inning. • April 13, 2001: Picks up the 5,000th total base of his career (achieved by 14 others) with a two-out single in the fifth inning in a game against the Devil Rays.
• Aug. 2, 1997: Streak Close Call: In Game 2,423, Ripken considers leaving the game in the bottom of the first at Oakland with lower back pain. He stays in and singles in his next at-bat. He homers the next day and his back steadily improves. • Homer happy: His 16 homers at Network Associates Coliseum are the most he's hit in any visiting ballpark (has also hit 16 at the Metrodome).
• June 6, 1993: Streak Close Call: In Game 1,790, suffers a twisted right knee when his spikes catch in the turf during O's-Mariners melee. Stays in the game, but his knee is swollen and painful the next day. Ripken says later, "It was the closest I've come to not playing." • May 23, 1996: Only time in his career he homers three times in a game. Also drives in a career-high eight runs. • October, 1997: Hits .438 in four-game ALDS against the Mariners (7-for-16).
• Sept. 14, 1982: Hits his first career grand slam off Mike Morgan of the Yankees. • Sept. 20, 1998: The Streak ends against the Yankees. Ryan Minor gets the start at third base as Ripken takes a seat for the first time in 16 years. |
