GAME LOG
MILWAUKEE (AP) The Milwaukee Brewers used a lot of power to beat the New York Mets in their series opener. Pinch-hitter Tyler Houston has a tiebreaking two-run homer, and Richie Sexson and Jeromy Burnitz hit consecutive shots Tuesday night to lead the Milwaukee Brewers over the New York Mets 6-4. "I thought we had this one," Mets manager Bobby Valentine said. "They came back at us, though." Houston broke a 4-all tie with his sixth-inning drive off Donne Wall (0-2), which followed Geoff Jenkins' walk. Houston got his fifth pinch homer, his first since last July 27 at Pittsburgh. The Brewers hit 16 home runs in their first homestand, a nine-game run that opened Miller Park. "We do live by the long ball at times," Houston said after the Brewers upped their record to 9-2 when they score four runs or more. Sexson and Burnitz homered in the third off Glendon Rusch, who allowed four runs and 10 hits in four innings. "I threw too many of my balls in the middle of the plate," Rusch said. "They were on everything. They were too aggressive." Sexson's two-run homer banged off the window of the restaurant in left field and Burnitz's 450-foot solo shot that cleared the bleachers in right, the longest homer this far at Miller Park. Burnitz hit a 1-0 pitch that easily cleared the bleachers in right field. The previous longest homer had been a 441-foot drive by Barry Bonds on April 13. "It's a home run whether it goes that far or just scrapes the back of the fence," Burnitz said. "It really doesn't matter." It gave the Brewers a 4-2 lead, but Milwaukee starter Jamey Wright couldn't make it stand up. The Mets got a run back in the fifth on Edgardo Alfonzo's third hit in the game and then tied it in the sixth when Wright lost his control. With two outs, Jay Payton tripled off the wall in center. The ball caromed away from center fielder Jeffrey Hammonds. allowing Payton to reach third easily. Wright walked Rey Ordonez and pinch-hitter Desi Relaford, and Mike DeJean (2-0) walked in a run before Alfonzo hit an inning-ending flyout. Chad Fox and David Weathers each threw an inning of scoreless relief before Curtis Leskanic got the three outs for his second save. Wright gave up four runs, seven hits and six walks in 5 2/3 innings, getting help from three double plays, including one by Todd Zeile with the bases loaded and one out in the fifth. Tony Fernandez, who went 3-for-4, put Milwaukee ahead with an RBI single in the second that ended Rusch's stretch of consecutive scoreless innings at 15, one short of his career high. Alfonzo, 3-for-5 with three RBIs, hit a two-run homer in the third following Joe McEwing's triple. Game notesMets OF Benny Agbayani was activated before the game and went 2-for-5. He had been on the DL since April 9 with a chip broken hamate bone in his left wrist. He replaced Brian Rose, who was claimed off waivers by Tampa Bay. ... Payton also tripled. ... Brewers RHP Jeff D'Amico was placed on the 15-day DL and RHP Allan Levrault was recalled from Triple A Indianapolis. D'Amico has a compressed nerve in the muscle above his right elbow. ...
