TORONTO (AP) – After Joey Hamilton kept the Toronto Blue Jays in the game by escaping a bases-loaded, no-outs jam, Raul Mondesi went to work.

Mondesi homered in the fifth inning and hit a tiebreaking single in the seventh as the Blue Jays beat the Texas Rangers 7-5 Tuesday night.

Mondesi, who drove in three runs, gave Toronto a 4-3 lead with a two-run homer off Doug Davis after Hamilton got out of trouble in the top of the fifth by striking out Frank Catalanotto and Ruben Mateo, then retiring Gabe Kapler on a grounder.

"Joey kept us in the game, and if our pitchers do that we're going to win a lot of games this year," Mondesi said.

Rafael Palmeiro tied it with an RBI single in the sixth, but Mondesi threw out Alex Rodriguez as he tried to go first to third on Palmeiro's one-out hit.

Mondesi then put Blue Jays ahead again in the seventh.

Shannon Stewart led off with a double off Pat Mahomes (0-2), Alex Gonzalez sacrificed and Mondesi followed with his single to center field.

"I feel real good," Mondesi said. "My timing is getting better."

John Frascatore (1-0) pitched 1 1/3 innings for the win, and Billy Koch went the ninth for his fifth save. Ivan Rodriguez homered for the fourth straight game, tying a team record, when he connected off Koch.

Toronto's Jose Cruz Jr. extended his hitting streak to an AL season-high 17 games.

Alex Rodriguez extended his hitting streak to 12 games. Rodriguez, who was booed when he was introduced for his first at-bat, went 1-for-4.

"Credit Hamilton for shutting us down with men on base," Rodriguez said. "It seemed like he threw better when he was in a jam."

After Hamilton worked his way out of trouble, the Blue Jays rallied from a 3-0 deficit with four runs in the fifth on Tony Batista's fifth homer, Gonzalez's RBI single and Mondesi's fifth homer.

"We came back with the four runs which is real nice," Hamilton said.

Texas scored three runs in the second on Andres Galarraga's RBI double, Mateo's run-scoring single and Rusty Greer's sacrifice fly.

Toronto added two runs in the eighth on Stewart's RBI single and Gonzalez's sacrifice fly.
