Jeter steals home in victory
RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

BALTIMORE (AP) – Andy Pettitte extended his mastery of the Baltimore Orioles, even though his teammates nearly sabotaged his performance.

Andy Pettitte
Andy Pettitte allowed two runs over seven innings to improve to 8-1 at Camden Yards.

Pettitte overcame three errors that led to two unearned runs, and Derek Jeter stole home to cap a four-run third inning as the New York Yankees cruised to a 5-2 victory Saturday.

Jeter and Chuck Knoblauch both had two hits and an RBI for the Yankees, who will send former Oriole Mike Mussina to the mound Sunday looking to complete a four-game sweep.

Pettitte (4-3) allowed six hits – all singles – in seven innings. The left-hander struck out eight and walked two in improving to 12-3 against Baltimore, including 8-1 at Camden Yards.

"We made a few mistakes defensively, and then I got a little careful and lost some aggressiveness," Pettitte said. "But I made some pitches to get out of those innings, and that was big."

An error by Scott Brosius at third base and a passed ball by Jorge Posada gave Baltimore an unearned run in the third. The next inning, second baseman Alfonso Soriano dropped a throw, setting up an RBI single by Jerry Hairston.

"We asked (Pettitte) to get too many outs today, but he held together pretty well, which was big," Yankees manager Joe Torre said. "We were really very crisp and doing a lot of good things, and all of a sudden it got ugly."

Pettitte, however, didn't buckle under the strain.

"It was nice to not let them too too much damage in those innings," he said.

Brian Boehringer pitched two perfect two innings for his first career save, striking out four.

Cal Ripken had two hits and scored a run for the Orioles, whose season-high fourth straight loss dropped them five games under .500 for the first time this year.

"Pettitte is a good, veteran pitcher," Baltimore manager Mike Hargrove said. "They made some errors to open the door for us, but we never could quite step all the way through it."

Orioles starter Willis Roberts (4-1) retired the first seven batters before six straight hitters reached in the third. After Soriano singled and Scott Brosius walked, Knoblauch, Jeter and Paul O'Neill delivered RBI singles.

With a 3-2 count on Bernie Williams, Jeter broke from third and O'Neill took off for second. Although Roberts threw ball four, catcher Fernando Lunar inexplicably threw to second and Jeter scooted to the plate with the Yankees' first steal of home since he did it in June 1999.

"It was a late call by the umpire. Fernando thought it was a strike," Hargrove said.

Jeter said, "As soon as the catcher threw to second I was going, and that was basically it. I didn't know if it was ball four or whatever, I was just going."

Roberts gave up four runs, six hits and five walks in seven innings. It was the first major league loss for the rookie right-hander, whose only appearance in the big leagues before this season was in one game with Detroit in 1999.

"He struggled with his command today," Hargrove said. "His balls and strikes were about split (58 strikes, 49 balls). He's better than that, and he knows it."

After Roberts left, Brosius hit a two-out RBI single in a run in the eighth off Jose Mercedes.
