SAN DIEGO (AP) -- San Diego Padres pitchers should stay away from
sharp objects.

Adam Eaton accidentally stabbed himself in the stomach with a
small knife on Wednesday night and emergency starter Wascar Serrano was lit up by the Houston Astros on Thursday in an 8-4 loss.
Eaton, who leads the Padres with six victories, needed two
stitches to close the cut and was held out as a precaution.
Shane Reynolds hit the first homer by a Houston pitcher in more
than a year and Vinny Castilla went 4-for-4 as the Astros won their
second straight following a season-high eight-game losing streak.
Four of those losses were to the Padres.
"Obviously he's their best pitcher, he's won a lot of games,"
Houston manager Larry Dierker said of Eaton (6-3). "Then you turn
around and face a guy that doesn't throw as hard and doesn't have
as good a control and gamesmanship, and it's a break."
Serrano is a rookie who was making his fourth start.
"We've had a lot of breaks in the schedule. We haven't really
taken advantage of them, but we did today," Dierker said.
Eaton cut himself trying to open a package of DVDs.
"It was just a boneheaded play," he said. "They're in those plastic packages that no one can get open. I was using a little knife to cut it and it slipped. You learn when you're little to cut away from yourself."
Serrano said he was surprised when he got the start.
"Tough day," he said. "I was up."
Padres manager Bruce Bochy said he thought Serrano would be
ready to go based on a bullpen session a few days earlier.
"He was all set to go, but he just happened to give up the big inning. That came back to haunt us," he said. "You probably think he was surprised. You shouldn't be as players. It's part of picking each other up."
Serrano hadn't pitched in a week, with his turn being passed
over because of a day off, and he wasn't sharp. He fell behind 4-0
in the first, allowing Lance Berkman's two-run double and
RBI-singles by Moises Alou and Castilla.
Reynolds made it 5-1 when he drove an 0-1 pitch into the
left-center field seats with one out in the second. It was his
fifth career homer, and the first by an Astros pitcher since he
connected off Brian Boehringer in a 10-4 win at San Diego on April
14, 2000.
"Really, facing a guy that we hadn't seen before, we usually have some trouble with," Reynolds said. "Not knowing what he throws and how he throws and what situations, stuff like that, it takes a few innings to kind of get accustomed to it.
"But I think we were very aggressive today early in the game.
We swung the bat real well and took advantage of some situations
and scored some runs early."
Berkman added three hits and three RBI. He and Castilla each hit two doubles.
Reynolds (5-4) pitched effectively, allowing four runs and seven
hits in seven innings and snapped a two-start losing streak.
Serrano (2-2) allowed six runs and nine hits in six innings.
Daryle Ward hit an RBI-double in the sixth off Serrano and the
Astros added two more in the seventh, one unearned, off reliever
Jose Nunez. A double error on the Padres led to the second run in
the seventh. Jose Vizcaino was on third and didn't try to score on
Alou's medium-deep fly ball to right. But when right fielder Bubba
Trammell made a short flip to second baseman Cesar Crespo, Vizcaino
broke for home and scored easily.
Trammell hit a two-run homer in the seventh off Reynolds, his
ninth.
Game notes
Shouting could be heard coming from the Astros' clubhouse after the game and reporters were kept waiting about 10 minutes
longer than normal. Dierker refused to say what happened. ...
Padres catcher Wiki Gonzalez left the game with a sprained right
ankle after Berkman plowed into him scoring from first on Ward's
double in the sixth. He was replaced by Ben Davis. ... Reynolds' home run was the fourth straight hit by an Astros pitcher. ... Rickey Henderson of the Padres is in an 0-for-18 slump over his
last six games. He hasn't scored a run in his past eight games,
keeping him 41 short of breaking Ty Cobb's career record of 2,245.
... The Padres went just 2-5 on the homestand, falling to 11-18 at
Qualcomm Stadium. They took sole possession first place in the NL
West for a day and were five games above .500 after beating Arizona
on May 24, but are now just one game over .500.
