L.A. overcomes five-run deficit for win

HOUSTON (AP) -- Tim Bogar's first hit since leaving Houston really hurt the Astros.

Bogar, released in 2000 after four years with the Astros, delivered a pinch-hit homer in the 10th inning Sunday to give the Los Angeles Dodgers a 9-8 win in a game Houston led by five runs.

It was the first pinch-hit homer of his career and first hit of the season for Bogar, who was on the disabled list from April 5 to May 28 with a strained right hamstring.

"It's just a good feeling to finally help out this team," said Bogar, who batted for reliever Mike Fetters with two outs in the 10th. "I have a lot of friends over there and I had a lot of fun while I was here. But I have no regrets about leaving.

"It's just nice that I did it for this team. I really have kind of felt like dead weight until today."

Bogar hit only .207 in 110 games with Houston last season.

This season has been ruined by injury.

"It's frustrating when you keep hurting the same thing over and over," he said. "I can't say I'm 100 percent right now. If I had to go out and play every day, I don't think I could do it. But it should get better as we go along."

The Astros, meanwhile, had closer Billy Wagner leave in the ninth inning after facing only two batters. He strained his left elbow, the same elbow he had surgery on last year, and will have an MRI exam Monday.

"I think we should have won the game," Astros manager Larry Dierker said. "When you have a five-run lead, you should find a way to win. But right now, I think everybody is more concerned about Billy than that we lost the game."

Kent Bottenfield started and struggled through five innings, allowing five runs on eight hits. It was Bottenfield's fourth poor outing in five starts since returning from the bullpen May 7.

"I'm not getting any of the right movement on my pitches right now," Bottenfield said. "I need to find out why. I don't know what it is, but it might be my mechanics."

Fetters (2-1) pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings for the win. Jeff Shaw pitched the 10th inning and got his NL-leading 17th save in 18 chances.

Octavio Dotel (2-4) pitched 1 2/3 innings and gave up Bogar's home run.

Vinny Castilla hit two home runs, including a grand slam, and tied a career high with six RBI as Houston -- which had won four straight games -- built an 8-3 lead in the third inning.

Los Angeles' Tom Goodwin was 5-for-5 with a double and four singles.

In the fifth inning, Shawn Green's RBI single and Marquis Grissom's sacrifice fly drew the Dodgers within 8-5.

Green's two-run homer in the seventh -- his 13th of the season -- made it 8-7, and Goodwin's infield RBI single tied the game in the following inning.

Dodgers starter Eric Gagne lasted only 2 2/3 innings, his shortest outing this season, and hit three batters. He allowed eight runs on six hits.

Gagne's first career homer made it 3-0 for the Dodgers in the second.

Castilla's two-run homer cut Houston's deficit to 3-2 in the second. The Astros then went ahead by scoring six runs in the third inning, with the highlight Castilla's grand slam.

Castilla signed with Houston last month after being released by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

Game notes
Taiwan's president, Chen Shui-Bian, attended the game. There were about 200 pro-Taiwan demonstrators in the center-field stands and about 50 protesters down the left-field line. ... Goodwin's five hits were a career high ... Astros reliever Mike Jackson has a 0.00 ERA in 12 appearances covering 13 2/3 innings on the road this year ... The grand slam was Castilla's third of his career, and first since July 12, 1996, when he was with the Rockies. It was the 24th multihomer game of his career and the fourth time he has had six RBI in a game. ... It was Houston's fifth grand slam of the season, one short of the team record set in 1989.
