Baseball is dying ... again

A Wall Street Journal report shows that participation in youth baseball appears to be in heavy decline.

Now

Cincinnati Reds @Reds

Harper's magnificent month of May

Bryce Harper is now slugging exactly 1.000 in May -- he's had 11 HRs this month -- putting him in some incredible company.

Adam Rubin @AdamRubinESPN

Noah Syndergaard will start Wednesday vs. Philadelphia on normal rest. Assuming Dillon Gee slotting in, it's afterward.

Jim Caple @jimcaple

Another scoreless outing for Chris Young, now 4-0 with a 0.78 ERA. Why did the Mariners not re-sign him?

Prince finding a rhythm

Through the first 42 games this season, Prince Fielder has improved his BA, HRs and RBIs compared to the same point last season.

How to fix MLB's foreign-substance rule

Buster Olney votes for transparency, because then "everybody from hitters to managers to pitchers to umpires to MLB officials can stop pretending they don't see the half-dollar sized spots on the caps of pitchers, or the shiny stuff on the wrists of a lot of pitchers." Check with umps

Escobar has the Royals flipping out

For most of us, lying flat on our stomachs means it's nap time. If you're Kansas City SS Alcides Escobar, however, that's the perfect position to throw a runner out at second.

Bryce Harper putting the H in home run

The Nats OF hit his 11th home run since May 6 and is now slugging 1.000 for the month of May. If he keeps it up, he'll be the 4th player since 1900 to have a slugging percentage of 1.000 or better in May, joining Babe Ruth, Barry Bonds and Todd Helton.

Matt Wieters targeting June 4 return

The O's catcher, who had Tommy John surgery in June 2014, is eligible to come off the 60-day DL on June 4 and believes that's a possibility: "The last few games I've gone out there and played, the feelings of being able to get back in a big league game are there. It's not quite back to where it was yet, but it feels good enough to get back playing at this level."

Hanley Ramirez questionable today

The Red Sox LF, hit on the hand in the 4th inning, left Friday's game in the 6th with soreness. Initial tests were negative, but Ramirez is questionable for today's game. An injured shoulder previously kept him out of 4 games earlier this month.
