Alex Avila, Tigers agree to deal

The Detroit Tigers avoided arbitration with No. 1 catcher Alex Avila on Friday as he agreed to a one-year deal.

The Tigers announced the agreement Friday night.

The deal is for $4.35 million, sources said, and has a $5.4 million option for 2015, which triggers if Avila is selected to the All-Star team or makes the top 10 in MVP or Silver Slugger voting in 2014.
