Red Sox, Yankees no longer playoff givens

As it turns out, perhaps the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox do not have a stranglehold on half the playoff spots in the American League after all. Three times in the last six seasons – including the last two in a row – the Yankees have finished first and the Red Sox second. Each time, the teams went on to meet in an epic ALCS clash.
