Patterson, Orioles agree on $4.3 million, 1-year contract

BALTIMORE -- Center fielder Corey Patterson avoided arbitration with the Baltimore Orioles, agreeing Friday to a $4.3 million, one-year contract.

Patterson had a career-high 45 stolen bases last season and batted .276 -- 61 points higher than he hit in 2005 with the Chicago Cubs. He had 16 homers, 53 RBIs and scored 75 runs.

The 27-year-old Patterson was asking for $4.6 million, and the Orioles offered $4 million. Patterson also can make $150,000 each for 500 and 520 plate appearances.
