Rays extend Zobrist's contract

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The Tampa Bay Rays rewarded super utility player Ben Zobrist for his breakout season with a three-year contract extension worth up to $30 million.

The club announced the agreement with the 28-year-old infielder-outfielder Friday, when the Rays returned home to Tropicana Field after the most successful road trip -- 9-1 -- in team history.

The first three years of the extension are guaranteed; the team holds options for the 2014 and 2015 seasons.
