Chase Headley takes batting practice

SAN DIEGO -- Padres third baseman Chase Headley was encouraged Wednesday after taking batting practice for the first time since breaking his left thumb in a spring game.

Headley swung from both sides of the plate and said he felt no pain. He broke his thumb while sliding into second base trying to break up a double play on March 17.

"Today's the first day on the field. I don't think we're a long way off," said Headley, who previously had hit off a tee and in soft toss.
